Miners snap six match losing streak with sweep of Ohio Dominican

Aurora, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Miners snapped its six match losing streak sweeping past Ohio Dominican in its opening match at the 10th annual Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill. on Friday afternoon. The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .347 which was their second highest of the season.

S&T (6-14) trailed for the early portions of the opening set but eventually came back to take a 14-12 lead on a kill from Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic). The Panthers (3-16) responded by scoring three of the next four points to even the set at 15 but the Miners countered that run by scoring five of the next six points to grab its largest lead of the set at 20-16 on a kill from Combs.

The Miners continued to hold the lead at 24-21 and had a chance to close out the set but ODU scored back-to-back points to cut the deficit to 24-23 and force S&T to call timeout. After the timeout Patricia Barreto hit the serve into the set giving the opener to the Miners 25-23. Combs and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) combined for nearly half of the Miners kills in the stanza.

S&T fell behind again early in set two but used a hot hitting offense to come back. The Miners hit 44.4 percent in the frame and had 20 kills led by nine from Combs. S&T built a 12-point lead but the Panthers were able to trim it to nine but the Miners closed it out scoring two of the last three points to win 25-15 and take the commanding 2-0 lead.

S&T had to come from behind again in the third set but rallied and eventually began to pull away building a 17-10 lead on a kill from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State). Ohio Dominican began to chip away at the advantage by scoring eight of the next 10 points but were unable to get any closer than one the rest of the match. The Miners closed out the match on a 6-2 run led by a pair of kills from Schlader.

Combs finished with a match-high 17 kills to lead S&T while Schlader finished with 10. Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) and Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) each had 20 assists and Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had a match-high 20 digs.

Alexis Young and Alyssa Hoyng led the Panthers with 10 and nine kills respectively. Ashton Barr distributed 29 assists while Anna Ficker finished with 16 digs.

S&T returns to the court on Saturday taking on Lake Superior State beginning at 10 a.m. at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill.
