ROLLA, Mo. – Fresh off a trip to the Gulf Coast that saw it pick up a win and a tie in the opening weekend of play, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team jumps right into its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule as it also opens its home slate of games this weekend.
The Miners will host Saint Joseph's in their GLVC opener Friday at 7:30 p.m., then take on Indianapolis Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to wrap up their opening weekend. Both games are scheduled to take place at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field.
S&T opened its 2016 season by playing to a 1-1 tie at Spring Hill, then blanked West Florida – a team picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference – by a 3-0 count Sunday.
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), who came into the season as the Miners' top returning scorer from a year ago, picked up right where he left off as he scored three of the Miners' four goals over the weekend, including two in Sunday's victory. The goals backed the shutout performance of
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South), who turned away four shots in the contest.
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand) scored S&T's fourth goal of the weekend, a tally near the end of the first half Sunday that gave the Miners a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.
Hohenstein played both games in goal and made six saves in those contests; he has a 0.45 goals against average in 200 minutes of play.
Saint Joseph's dropped both of its contests over the holiday weekend, falling 2-0 to Northwood and 3-1 to nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State. Peter Munro scored the only goal for the Pumas, while Adam Whybrow made 14 saves in goal in those contests.
S&T played to a pair of ties with Saint Joseph's a year ago, including the opening round of the GLVC Tournament where the Miners advanced by winning a penalty kick shootout.
Indianapolis was listed just outside the national top 25 this week after knocking off a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference teams in its first weekend of action. The Greyhounds downed Cedarville 2-1 in overtime and then beat Davis & Elkins 5-1 to complete the 2-0 weekend.
James Jenkins scored twice for the Greyhounds over the weekend, tallying the first two goals for UIndy in Sunday's win, while Jake Meyer scored the game-winner 2:39 into overtime against Cedarville. Chris Jones was credited with two saves in goal in the two contests.
