Box Score ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – After playing in back-to-back scoreless ties and on the verge of playing in a third, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team picked a great time to break its scoring drought and as a result, captured its first Great Lakes Valley Conference contest of the season.
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) scored with 3:46 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Miners a
1-0 win at Lewis Sunday afternoon, improving S&T to 2-0-3 on the year and 1-0-2 in the GLVC after it had played to ties with Indianapolis and Wisconsin-Parkside to open its GLVC slate.
The Miners got a free kick opportunity near midfield and after that feed was hauled in by Lewis goalkeeper Philip Huang, S&T got possession back and
Matt Kilwin (St. Louis, MO/Chaminade College Prep) sent a shot towards the goal that Ulfarsson, charging in from the left side, got a head on and put past Huang to end the hard-fought contest.
The teams were even in shots in the first half at four apiece, but the Miners put pressure on the Flyers early in the second half with a pair of shots on goal and two corner kick opportunities in the first 10 minutes.
In the 76
th minute, at the time when the Flyers were starting to switch the momentum, S&T goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) made a sliding stop on Juan Elizade after he received a pass down the right side of the field. S&T then had a chance following a corner kick in the 81
st minute, but
Bryce Johnson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) had a shot blocked in front of the net.
The Miners had a 9-7 edge in shots in the second half.
Lewis had the first chance in overtime when Tommy Donnelly hit a shot from the top of the box over the top of the net, then Donnelly had another chance a couple of minutes later when S&T couldn't clear a ball out and hit that attempt wide. Before the first overtime ended, S&T's Tobi Beck hit a shot over the crossbar from the top of the box.
Each team ended with 16 shots in the game; the Miners had eight on goal while the Flyers (1-5, 0-4 GLVC) finished with six. Hohenstein recorded his fourth straight shutout by turning away all six of the Flyers' shot on goal.
The Miners will remain on the road next weekend, beginning with a game Friday at Quincy that will begin at 7:30 p.m.
