Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners return to action this weekend against a pair of former MIAA Rivals in the Holiday Inn Express/Candlewood Suites Classic hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. The Lady Miners (3-1) will take on the host Griffons this Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then will take on Northwest Missouri State at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
S&T looks to extend its winning streak when it takes on Missouri Western on Friday evening. The Lady Miners picked up a pair of home victories over Lincoln and Missouri Baptist this past weekend to improve to 3-1 for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
S&T has shot the ball well inside the perimeter making 48.5 percent (83-for-171) its attempts but has struggled beyond the arc connecting on only 21-of-79 (26.6 percent) attempts.
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) leads the team in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game and is coming off her second career 20-plus point performance with 21 against Missouri Baptist on Saturday and has scored in double figures all four games.
Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) is averaging 8.8 points and 4.0 assists per game while
Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) is averaging 7.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest.
Missouri Western improved to 4-1 on the season after picking up a pair of wins in Hawaii over the weekend. The Griffons defeated Hawaii Pacific 70-62 last Friday with four players reaching double figures led by Chelsea Dewey with 16 points. Julia Torres and Savannah Lentz added 14 points each while Erin Anderson dropped in 11. On Saturday, MWSU rolled to a 78-49 win over BYU-Hawaii pulling away with a big second quarter. Dewey led the squad with 19 points while
Dwanisha Tate added 12 and Lentz dropped home 11.
The Griffons are led in scoring by Tate and Dewey with 13.4 points each while Anderson and Torres are adding nine points apiece per game. MWSU is forcing its opponents into nearly 25 turnovers per contest and have forced at least 20 turnovers in every game this season.
Northwest Missouri enters play this week with a record of 4-0 heading into Tuesday night's contest against Kansas Christian College. The Bearcats will take on GLVC member William Jewell prior to the Lady Miner game on Friday evening.
Northwest picked up a pair of wins last weekend defeating Bellevue (Neb.) 69-55 and then defeated Rockhurst 78-67 last Saturday. Tanya Meyer leads the Bearcats in scoring averaging 22.3 points per game and is tied for the league lead in scoring with Lincoln's Hunter Yoakum. Jasmin Howe is adding 15 points per game to the attack while Arbrie Benson is dropping in 10 points per contest.
