Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners swept past Missouri Western
3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-17) to win its third straight match and snapped the Griffons (10-3) 10 match winning streak.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) finished with a match high 13 kills and also recorded six total blocks to surpass 500 total blocks for her career.
S&T (9-5) got off to slow start on Tuesday falling behind 4-0 to begin the match before scoring six straight to take the lead. The Griffs would come back to even the set at seven on a double block by Jessie Thorup and Rachel Friedrichs.
The Miners proceeded to use an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead and forced Missouri Western to take a timeout during the run. The Griffons would cut the lead to 15-12 but a subsequent 5-0 run by S&T gave them control of the stanza as it went on to the 10 point victory capped by a service ace from
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside).
In the second frame it was S&T that got off to the quick start racing out of the gates to a 5-0 lead. However, Missouri Western scored 14 of the next 18 points to take a five point edge midway through the stanza.
The Miners tied the set multiple times but couldn't quite retake the lead and it appeared the Griffons would even the match taking a 24-22 lead on a kill from Shellby Taylor. S&T had other ideas rattling off four straight points getting kills from
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic),
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) to take a 25-24 lead and forced MWSU to take a timeout. After the timeout the Griffons committed an attack error giving S&T the set 26-24 and a 2-0 lead.
The Miners gave up the first three points of the third set before rattling off a 6-1 run to take the lead on a kill from Moon. The two sides then traded points and were tied at 8-8 when S&T took control using a 10-0 run to bust the match open. Missouri Western would close to within six points on two different occasions but wouldn't get any closer than that as the Miners ended the match on a double block from Moon and Combs.
S&T finished the match with 42 kills against 21 errors in 124 attacks, had a hitting percentage of .169 and finished the contest with eight total blocks. Haslag was the only Miner in double figures but Moon, Combs and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) had seven kills each while Luther finished with six.
