Rolla, Mo. - It wasn't pretty at times but the Missouri S&T Miners were able to sweep past Maryville
3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) for its fourth straight win on Friday night. S&T (10-5, 3-2 GLVC) has now won 12 of its last 13 sets since dropping the final set at Lewis on September 19.
The Miners got out of the gates strong taking an early four point lead, but the Saints (6-8, 1-4 GLVC) rallied to even things at 10 on a kill by Cydney Long. S&T regained the lead on the next point as
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) knocked down one of her four kills in the opening frame sparking a 5-1 run.
Maryville wouldn't go away storming back to take a 21-20 lead on a kill by Kelsey Warden for its first lead of the set. After exchanging points the Miners scored the final four points to take the opener 25-22.
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) recorded back-to-back double blocks to end the stanza.
The second set saw 12 ties and four lead changes with three points being the biggest lead either side had. With the stanza tied at 20 Combs recorded back-to-back kills to give S&T a 22-20 lead forcing Maryville to call its second timeout of the set. After a block by Moon, the Saints got a point back on a kill from Maddie Timmerman to make it 23-21. Moon responded with a kill and then
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) put the finishing touch on the second set win with her fourth kill of the frame.
After the intermission the Saints came out looking to extend the match scoring six of the first nine points to take the lead. S&T came back to tie it at 6-6, but Maryville countered with an 8-2 run forcing the Miners to take a timeout.
After the timeout, S&T began to chip away at the lead eventually taking a 20-19 advantage on a kill by Combs. The Saints tied the set at 21 after a block by Ashley Selman before the Miners scored three of the next four points to reach match point on Friedlund's ninth kill of the contest.
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) finished off the match with her third service ace to secure the victory.
S&T finished the contest with 47 kills against 15 errors in 129 total attacks ending the match with a .248 attack percentage. Combs and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) were the lone Miners in double figures with 17 and 10 kills respectively.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 38 assists while Pyles dug up 18 attacks. S&T also had 11 total team blocks in the contest.
Maryville finished the match hitting just .128 percent (38k/22e/125ta). Timmeramnn led the Saints with 12 kills while Selman and Laura Welling had seven kills each. Taryn Trubich had 17 assists while Ali Lampen finished with a match-high 20 digs.
The Miners are back in action on Saturday when they host a tri-match at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building starting at 11:30 a.m. S&T will take on Missouri-St. Louis in the first match of the day and then will conclude the day against Southern Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. The Tritons and Lady Muleriders will square off at 3:45 p.m.
