Late run propels Miners past Southern Arkansas

S&T rallies past Tritons in opener of triangular

Rolla, Mo. - Trailing 13-9 in the fifth set the Missouri S&T Miners scored the final six points to pull out a 3-2 (26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-13) win over Southern Arkansas on Saturday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Earlier in the day, S&T rallied for a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Missouri-St. Louis.

In the deciding fifth set the Miners (12-5) held a 7-5 lead before committing five straight errors as part of a 7-0 run by the Lady Muleriders (9-8). Back-to-back kills by Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) pulled S&T to within 12-9 but Serena LeDuff answered with a kill to push the lead back to four. Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) started the match deciding run with a pair of kills sandwiched around a SAU error to pull the Miners within one and then Combs and Moon teamed up for a block on LeDuff to tie the set.

On the ensuing point Alli O'Banion hit one out of bounds but the Lady Mulerider bench claimed there was a touch at the net but the call was upheld giving S&T the 14-13 lead. After a second timeout by Southern Arkansas its coach was ejected from the contest for continuing to protest the call. After the delay Combs and Moon again teamed up to block LeDuff to end the set 15-13.

The entire match went back-and-forth with 14 ties and eight lead changes.

The Miners played from behind for a majority of the match.
