Rolla, Mo. – The trio of
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood),
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) combined for 38 of Missouri S&T's 59 kills to pace the Miner attack in a
3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15) win over the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. With the win S&T runs its home winning streak to three and its overall winning streak to two.
S&T (8-5, 2-2 GLVC) came out of the gates strong opening on a 5-2 run to take the early lead. The Miners continued to hold off the Greyhounds (4-8, 2-2 GLVC) and had a four point lead midway through. UIndy eventually came back to take its only lead of the frame at 20-19 after a bad set by
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside). The lead was short lived though as the Miners responded with three straight points on a kill from Combs and a double block from Moon and
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South).
The 'Hounds cut the deficit to 22-21 on a kill by Sarah Skinner before S&T put the frame away by scoring three of the final four points on kills by Moon, Haslag and Luther.
The Miners started the second set the same way they did the opener racing out to an early four point lead before UIndy came back to even it at 10. S&T quickly regained the lead though scoring six of the next eight points punctuated by back-to-back kills from Combs.
The 'Hounds closed to within a point six different times but each time the Miners were able to make a play to keep the lead. Combs fifth kill of the stanza eventually gave S&T the 25-23 victory and commanding 2-0 lead.
UIndy flipped the tables in the third set racing out to an early 7-2 lead forcing the Miners to take an early timeout. S&T certainly didn't help itself committing three errors of its own and giving up a pair of service aces.
The Miners played catchup for a majority of the set before eventually tying it at 20 on a kill from
Ashley Allegri (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East). The two sides then swapped points before the Greyhounds got to set point after an attack error by Combs. S&T staved off two set points getting back-to-back kills from Combs and Luther to even it at 24, but UIndy closed it out scoring the last two points to cut the lead in half.
The Miners used an 8-2 run midway through set four to extend a one point edge into a seven-point advantage.
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) had three kills in that run while Haslag chipped in with two.
The lead grew to 10 points late and would end up on that margin as Friedlund knocked home her fifth kill of the stanza and sixth of the match to end it.
S&T outhit the 'Hounds by a .275-to-.166 hitting percentage and recorded 59 kills to 53 for UIndy.
White dished out 46 assists while
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) finished with 23 digs for the Miners.
Skinner finished with a match high 14 kills to pace the Greyhounds while Becca Lira had 12. Natalie Wichern had 41 asssists and 13 digs while Bri Heffernan had 13 digs as well.
S&T continues its seven match homestand on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Missouri Western at 6 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
