ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team steps outside of Great Lakes Valley Conference play one last time before its final weekend of conference play Tuesday when it takes on Southeast Missouri State in a single game in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Game time is at 5 p.m. at Capaha Park, located just west of the Southeast campus.
The Miners come into Tuesday's contest with a record of 23-21 and are in the midst of a wild scramble to earn a berth in the GLVC Tournament, currently sitting one-half game out of a playoff spot prior to its weekend series at Rockhurst that begins Saturday.
Meanwhile, Southeast – once a rival of the Miners in their days in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association and now playing at the NCAA Division I level -- is 28-15 overall and is atop the standings by four games in the Ohio Valley Conference at 19-5 after sweeping a three-game series at Murray State over the weekend by a combined score of 37-17.
The Miners are hitting .306 as a team – second-best in the GLVC behind Quincy's .308 mark – heading into Tuesday's contest.
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) leads S&T with a .356 average, while
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central), fresh off a weekend series against William Jewell in which he went seven-of-13, has raised his average to .347.
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), who was four-of-seven in Sunday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, leads the Miners with six home runs and 35 runs batted in. He is currently tied for seventh in the GLVC in RBI and tied for eighth in home runs.
Southeast is hitting .304 as a squad with four regulars hitting over the .300 mark, led by outfielder Andy Lennington with a .350 batting mark and third baseman Trevor Ezell at .333. The Redhawks have five players who have driven in at least 30 runs, led by the 43 knocked in by first baseman Ryan Rippee.
Rippee and shortstop Branden Biggetto have hit eight home runs apiece as the Redhawks have homered 48 times on the season.
Tuesday's game will mark Missouri S&T's first contest against a team from the NCAA Division I ranks since 1989, when it dropped a contest to Missouri State. The Miners and Redhawks have not played since the 1991 season, Southeast's final year in the MIAA before its move to Division I.
