ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners got good pitching and some timely hitting to defeat Drury 4-0 on Tuesday to earn a split and snapped a 16-game losing streak in the process. The Panthers took the opener 12-0 in five innings.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) had three of the team's 10 hits in the doubleheader while
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) hit her first home run of the season.
Game 2: Lady Miners 4 Drury 0The Lady Miners (2-19, 1-13 GLVC) bounced back after a disappointing first game to take the nightcap.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) allowed just three hits in the contest while striking out five and issuing just one free pass in the complete game effort.
The game turned to S&T's favor in the top of third inning. With two outs Kari Hillenburg tripled to right field just over the glove of Rausch. Rausch stayed with it and fired a perfect strike to
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) who fired a bullet to
Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) to throw Hillenburg out at the plate as she tried for the inside-the-park home run.
The Lady Miners were held hitless through the first two-plus innings until Culbertson singled just under the glove of third baseman Carson Forge. Culbertson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) and scored on Weiss's triple to the gap in right center for the first run of the game.
S&T added to its lead in the fourth inning as
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s sacrifice fly to right field. After another flyout,
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) worked a walk and scored on Rausch's two-run home run to center field. Rausch blasted the first pitch she saw off the scoreboard.
That was all the support Strope needed as she held Panther (10-17, 4-10 GLVC) bats in check limiting just three singles, two of which were infield singles, and all three to Hillenburg. Strope allowed only one runner past second base while two others reached second. She was efficient in the contest needing just 89 pitches for the complete game win. Strope got 12 of her outs on the ground against three flyouts.
Culbertson had two hits to pace the S&T attack while Weiss,
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf), Slemp and Rausch had one each.
Game 1: Drury 12 Lady Miners 0, five inningsThe opener on Tuesday was all Drury as they scored 10 times on seven hits and took advantage of three Lady Miners in a second inning that saw them send 14 batters to the plate. The Panthers added to their lead with two more in the third inning on a two-run homer off the bat of Chantal Oelrich.
S&T was held to four hits in the opener with Michaelis, Thompson, Culbertson and Heckemeyer finishing with one apiece.
