LIBERTY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team snapped a 12-game losing streak against William Jewell with an
8-3 win in game of its doubleheader. The Cardinals used a three run sixth inning to take the nightcap
3-1 on Friday in Liberty, Mo. It's the first win over William Jewell for S&T since sweeping them in a season opening doubleheader back on March 2, 1996 14-3 and 13-0.
The Cardinals (18-13, 6-10 GLVC) broke on top with an unearned run in the home half of the second. Kelsey Morgan reached on an error to start the inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Shelby McGraw's single. S&T (3-20, 2-14 GLVC) avoided further damage as
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) got Kelsey Teneycke to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the ining.
The Lady Miners answered with three runs in the third.
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) led off with a double and advanced to third on an error which allowed
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) to reach.
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) then put S&T ahead hitting the second pitch she saw out of the park for her fourth home run of the season.
The Lady Miners added to their lead with three more in the fifth. Badalamenti led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a ball hit by Davis. Michaelis then dropped a single into shallow left field to load the bases. After a groundout,
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) was hit by a pitch to bring in Davis.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) followed with a single up the middle to bring home Michaelis.
Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) drove in the third run of the inning with a groundout to first.
William Jewell got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth but that would be all it got. S&T then added to its lead in the seventh inning. With two outs
Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) singled and came around to score on
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada)'s two-run homer to left center. The Cardinals then went in order in the home half of the inning to seal the win.
The Lady Miners banged out 12 hits in the opener led by Michaelis with four while Badalamenti and Culbertson had two hits each. Davis, Baker, Weiss and Heckemeyer had a hit each.
Michaelis drove in three runs and scored a pair of runs while Culbertson had two RBIs and a run scored.
Strope tossed a complete game allowing three runs, two earned, on hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The second game was scoreless until one out in the top of the sixth. Davis hit the second pitch she saw over the right field fence for her second home run of the season. William Jewell answered back in the home half of the frame. With one out Nona Pauline hit a line drive over the fence in right center to tie the game for her fifth home run of the year. With two outs the Cardinals got back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) fell behind in the count to Megan Kappler 3-0, but worked back to a full count. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat Kappler singled off the edge of Culbertson's glove allowing Morgan and Rachel Newbury to score making it 3-1.
S&T had a chance in the seventh. Baker led off the inning with a single off the left field fence and
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) came into run for her. V. Culbertson advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded there as a foul out, a groundout and a strikeout ended the game.
The Lady Miners had just four hits in game two led by Davis with two. Baker and
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) had the other two. Viets took the loss in the nightcap allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout against two walks.
S&T returns to the diamond on Saturday when it takes on Rockhurst at 12 p.m. in a doubleheader.
