Long balls, missed opportunities cost Lady Miners

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners banged out 17 hits and drew seven walks, but stranded 21 runners on base and allowed five home runs as it was swept in a doubleheader by Quincy 12-3 and 10-2 both in six innings on Monday. Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) led the offensive attack with four hits while Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) had three. Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown), Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) and Ashley Rausch (Washington, Iowa/Washington) had two hits each.

Game 1 – Quincy 12 Lady Miners 3
S&T (1-18, 0-12 GLVC) had a golden opportunity to break on top in the first inning loading the bases with one out but couldn't get the big hit as a pop out and strikeout ended the threat. Quincy (14-14, 5-7 GLVC) took advantage of that miss scoring three times in the top of the second on a double, an error and a two-run home run to make it 3-0.

The Lady Miners drew a pair of walks in the second inning and brought the tying run to the plate but a foul out to first ended the threat. The Hawks added two more in the third on a two-run home run by Rachel Scrum. S&T got a run back in the home half of the third. After the first two were retired the Lady Miners strung together three straight hits to bring in Weiss on an RBI hit from Thompson.

Quincy added to its lead in the fourth with a two-run home run off the bat of Karli McLaughlin. S&T got another single run in the fourth on a one out RBI double from Michaelis. The Lady Miners had a chance for more but had to settle for one as a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning.

The Hawks added three more in the fifth, but S&T got one back in the bottom of the inning to extend the game. Kelly Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth, Mo./St. Elizabeth) singled home Imhoff. Quincy added two more in the sixth getting a two run single from Scrum for the final margin.

Weiss had three of the Lady Miners nine hits in the opener while Imhoff and Thompson had apiece. Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) pitched the opener allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with a walk in 3.0 innings of work.
Game 2 – Quincy 10 Lady Miners 2
The Hawks struck quickly in the second game scoring three times before an out was recorded. Scrum had the big blow hitting a three-run homer for her second of the day. Quincy added two more in the second before S&T got a run in the third. Michaelis scored on a single from Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) to make it 5-1.

The Hawks added another run in the fourth, but the Lady Miners countered with a run of their own in the home half of the fourth. With two outs Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) singled to left center plating Rausch with the second run of the game. Quincy added another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to end the contest.

S&T had eight hits in the nightcap led by Michaelis and Rausch with two each. Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) got the start in game two allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits with a pair of walks.
