ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners took Truman State down to the wire bringing the tying run to the plate in both games of its doubleheader loss 6-4 and 6-2 on Sunday at the S&T Softball Field. S&T finished the day with 14 hits and was led offensively by
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) with three hits while
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) had two apiece.
Game 1: Truman State 6 Missouri S&T 4In the opener on Sunday the Bulldogs (19-5, 9-1 GLVC) broke on top in the second inning thanks to back-to-back one out doubles from Whitney Richardson and Ally McReynolds. The Lady Miners (1-16, 0-10 GLVC) tied the game in the home half of the third. Olivia and
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) led off the inning with a walk and single. With two outs
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) singled through the left side of the infield to load the bases.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) drove in O. Culbertson with a single through the right side and V. Culbertson tried to score on the play as well but was thrown out at the plate by the right fielder.
Truman regained the lead in the fourth on a two run single by Haley Wells. S&T tied it again in the home half of the inning.
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) led off the inning with a single and with one out Baker hit her second home run of the season. The Bulldogs regained the lead in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with no out a wild pitch scored the first run then Richardson singled to drive in another and a groundout to second brought in the third run of the inning.
The Lady Miners cut into the lead in the seventh. With two outs
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) walked and scored on Slemp's double to center field. Viets came up with a chance to tie the game but fouled out to short to end it.
Slemp had two hits in the opener with six players registering one hit.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) went the first five innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking five.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) tossed the final two inning allowing just a walk and two hits.
Game 2: Truman 6 Missouri S&T 2In the nightcap S&T struck first in the opening frame. With two outs Baker doubled to left center scoring
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) to make it 1-0. The Bulldogs tied the game in the second with a two out double and an error. Neither side threatened in the third or fourth but Truman scored two in the fifth to take the lead. Jamie Fowle hit a one out home run down the left field line and then Richardson added a two out single up the middle to make it 3-1.
Michaelis brought the Lady Miners back within 3-2 leading off the home half of the sixth with her third roundtripper of the year. The Bulldogs added three more in the seventh. Andrea Klipsch and Lex Van Nostrand hit back-to-back doubles to open the inning to make it 4-2. With two outs an error allowed another run to score and another double brought in the final run. S&T refused to go quietly in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases with two outs, but Michaelis popped out to second to end the game.
Davis had two hits in the nightcap to pace the offensive attack while Michaelis, Baker,
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) and
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) had a hit apiece. Viets got the start in game two allowing six runs, three earned, on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
The Lady Miners are back in action on Monday when they host Quincy in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Hawks were swept by Drury in a doubleheader on Sunday 2-0 and 5-2.
