WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game of its doubleheader at Central Missouri but ultimately fell
12-10. The Lady Miners dropped the opener
9-1 in six innings at Jennies Field at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg, Mo on Wednesday.
In the nightcap S&T (1-14) gave up three runs in each of the first two innings before rallying to tie the game with a six spot in the top of the third. The Lady Miners had runners at second and third with two outs and
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) at the plate. Slemp reached on an error by the shortstop allowing
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) to score from third and
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) to advance to third. Michaelis and Slemp pulled off their second double steal in the last three games to cut the margin to 6-2.
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) and
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) worked back-to-back walks bringing
Miranda Thompson (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch Thompson singled to left to bring home Slemp and Baker.
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) tied the game three pitches later with a double to left center driving in Imhoff and Thompson. S&T sent 12 batters to the plate in the third plating the six runs on three hits and took advantage of an error.
The Jens (20-7) answered back with a run in the home half of the third to regain the lead, but it was short lived as the Lady Miners scored three times in the fourth to take a 9-7 advantage. With one out and runners at second and third Slemp singled to right to drive in
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) to tie the game at 7. Baker then delivered a two-run single to center to give the Lady Miners their first lead of the contest.
UCM got a run back in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-8 and both sides were held scoreless in the fifth. S&T extended its lead in the sixth with a two out rally. Slemp doubled down the left field line and came into score on Baker's single to center. The Jennies responded with a two out rally of their own in the bottom of the sixth. A single, a stolen base and another single brought in a run to cut the lead to 10-9. A two out walk then loaded the bases for Amanda Nally. Nally hit a pitch back up the middle and into center field for a two run single. An error on the play allowed the runner from first to score on the play as well to give Central Missouri a 12-10 lead.
The Lady Miners got a one out single from Badalamenti in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the game.
Davis led the S&T offensive attack in game two finishing with three hits while Slemp, Baker and Badalamenti had two each. Baker, Thompson and Badalamenti combined for six of the seven runs batted in while Slemp scored three runs.
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got the start in game two allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in 1.2 innings.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) went the next four innings allowing four runs on four hits, but issued four walks.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) came on in relief of Rader in the sixth and took the loss allowing a pair of runs, one earned, on two hits in 0.1 innings.
In the opener on Wednesday, the Lady Miners fell behind in the first inning giving up a pair of runs. UCM added to its lead in the third inning to make it 3-0. S&T got a run back in the fourth before the Jennies broke the game open with a six run sixth inning.
Slemp had two of the team's four hits in the opener while Baker and
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) had a hit each. Strope took the loss allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 13 hits with a strikeout against two walks in 5.1 innings of work.
The Lady Miners are scheduled to return to action this Saturday when they host Quincy University in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
