Liberty, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners won its eighth straight match sweeping past William Jewell
3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-13) on Friday night at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo. S&T (14-5, 6-2 GLVC) hit .317 percent for the match registering 40 kills against just seven errors while holding the Cardinals (4-13, 0-8 GLVC) to .138 hitting percentage.
The Miners fell behind 3-1 to begin the match but quickly gained control by scoring seven of the next eight points to grab an 8-4 lead. The lead eventually ballooned to eight points before William Jewell trimmed the deficit to 23-19 on a service ace Stef Richterkessing. S&T staved off the comeback with kills from
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) to take the opener 25-20.
The Miners hit a whopping .432 percent in the second set recording 17 kills against just one error as they raced out to an early eight point lead. The Cardinals made things interesting getting to within 22-20 after a service ace from Raechel Meisinger, but S&T scored three of the final four points to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the intermission.
After a brief tie to open the third stanza the Miners surged ahead with a 6-1 run to take control of the frame and wouldn't look back. S&T led by as many as 12 points in the frame and eventually settled on that for the final margin as it won 25-13.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had a match high 11 kills while Luther added nine.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) had six and five kills respectively.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 34 assists while
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 18 digs.
Paige Cunningham led William Jewell with eight kills while Emily Burton contributed six kills to the attack. Richterkessing distributed 25 assists and Olivia Tolberd dug up 22 attacks.
The Miners are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Rockhurst beginning at 3 p.m. The Hawks defeated Drury in four sets on Friday night to run their winning streak to 16 straight matches.
