Rolla, Mo. – In a pivotal match in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division standings it was the Missouri S&T Miners who came out victorious with a
3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 26-24) win over Truman State on Friday night. With the victory the Miners (16-8, 7-3 GLVC) moved into sole possession of second place in the GLVC West and picked up their first ever win over the Bulldogs (13-8, 6-4 GLVC).
The match featured 37 ties and had 12 lead changes as the two teams battled back and forth the entire match.
S&T held a four point lead midway through the opening set but Truman rallied thanks to a 5-1 run to even the frame at 15 after an error by
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood). The Miners regrouped rattling off three straight points to regain the lead only to watch the 'Dogs come back to square it 18 on a kill by Bailey Mason.
S&T countered finishing the set on a 7-1 run as
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had two kills each in the run to take the opener 25-19. The Miners had an attack percentage of .382 in the frame while holding Truman to a .147 attack percentage.
The second set was a reversal of the first with the Bulldogs holding a three-point lead only to watch S&T come back to it at 11 on back-to-back service aces from Haslag. Truman regained the lead after a kill from Kayla Bastian sparking a 6-1 run. The Miners wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the set as the 'Dogs pulled away for a 25-18 win.
After the intermission S&T overcame a slow start and eventually pulled away with a 7-3 run midway through the stanza to take a 20-16 lead. Truman cut the deficit to five after a kill from Lacey Hill but back-to-back blocks from Haslag,
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) and
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) set the Miners up with set point.
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) served out the set with an ace to give S&T a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw 15 ties and six lead changes alone. The 'Dogs held a four point lead but the Miners worked their way back to tie it at 12 on a kill from Haslag. S&T took a 20-17 lead on a kill from Friedlund and appeared to be in control but Truman countered with a 7-2 run to take a 24-22 lead and get to set point after a kill from Bastian. The Miners refused to give in and rattled off the last four points of the set getting kills from Combs, Moon and
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) to win the set 26-24 and take the match.
Combs finished the contest with a match high 21 kills while Friedlund added 11 off the bench and Haslag chipped in with nine. White dished out 54 assists and
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) dug up 22 attacks. She was one of five S&T players to finish in double figures in digs.
Dana Shannon (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) had 17 digs, White added16, Combs had 12 and Denning contributed 10. The Miners finished the match with 95 digs.
The Miners had an attack percentage of .172 registering 58 kills against 26 errors in 186 chances.
The Bulldogs finished the match with 39 kills while committing 25 attacker errors in 169 chances and had a hitting percentage of .083. Bastian was the lone 'Dog in double figures with 10 kills while Ali Patterson and Emilee Walters had seven each. Kayleen Green had 17 assists and Sadie Pafford dug up a match high 24 attacks.
S&T is back in action on Saturday afternoon hosting Quincy in a 3 p.m. contest at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
