Miners play to tie with Pumas

9/19/2014 11:05:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A physical men's soccer game between Missouri S&T and Saint Joseph's Friday evening ended in a 1-1 tie, as the Miners were turned away twice in the final five minutes of overtime in an effort to pull out the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany/) had an attempt to win the game stopped by Lewis Jones IV, then Kramer Hall (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS) had a shot on goal in the final seconds that Jones made a save on as well to preserve the tie.

Following a scoreless first half, one that the Miners held a 9-3 advantage in shots, S&T broke the tie in the game's 69th minute.  Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/) sent a pass to the far wing to Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau), who dribbled it to about 15 yards away and sent a shot from the wing to the right of Jones and inside the far post to give the Miners the lead.

S&T goalkeeper Mason Fannin (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) made a diving stop of a low shot from Tomoyuki Sueki shortly after the Abichabki goal, but the Pumas (1-2-1, 1-1-1 GLVC) were able to tie it in the 77th minute.  The Miner defense made a stop of an initial shot by Jeff Grider, but couldn't get the ball cleared and Grider pounced on his own rebound and pushed the ball over the goal line to knot the score at one.

The Miners had a chance to take the lead with under seven minutes to go off a corner kick, but had a shot to the far post cleared by the Puma defense off the end line.

Saint Joseph's had the only two shots of the first overtime session, while the Miners – who had a 25-12 advantage for the contest – had all three attempts in the final 10 minutes.

Fannin, making his first start in goal for S&T, was credited with six saves on the night.

S&T (2-2-1, 1-1-1 GLVC) will host Indianapolis Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
