Miner soccer team to host Pumas, Greyhounds in weekend set

9/16/2014 4:08:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – After opening its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a split on the road, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team returns to campus for a pair of league contests this weekend.

The Miners, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, will host Saint Joseph's at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the S&T Soccer Field and the league's pre-season favorite, Indianapolis, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

S&T opened its conference slate by picking up a win at Wisconsin-Parkside for the first time ever, getting a goal from David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) in with under 13 minutes to play in regulation time for a 1-0 win.  The Miner defense held firm in the opening half as the Rangers outshot S&T 15-1, but goalkeeper James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) was up to the task as he turned away all seven UW-Parkside shots on net in the half.

The defensive unit did not allow a Ranger shot on goal in the final 30 minutes of play.

On Sunday, the Miners fell behind in the ninth minute of play at Lewis and wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 decision to the Flyers.  Ben Emnett (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) got the Miner goal on an assist from Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau).

Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West), who scored in each of the first two games of the season, leads the Miners with two goals on the season.  Holloway owns a 1.26 goals against average as play begins this weekend.

Saint Joseph's is coming off its first win of the 2014 season, as it goal a goal from Jeff Grider 8:31 into overtime to beat William Jewell 1-0 Sunday.  Grider has scored the only goal of the season for the Pumas (1-3, 1-1 GLVC), who were blanked in their two non-conference games before losing 2-0 in their GLVC opener to Rockhurst last Friday.

Lewis Jones IV, who has started three of the four games in the nets for Saint Joseph's, has a 1.16 goals against average for the year.

Indianapolis, who shared the GLVC title in 2013 and was picked to win this year's championship in the league's pre-season poll, is still looking for its first win of the year heading into the third weekend of play.  The Greyhounds, 0-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the GLVC, tied William Jewell 1-1 before losing to Rockhurst 1-0 in overtime Sunday.

Goalkeeper Andrew Verhonik has allowed four goals in 417 minutes of playing time with 13 saves; his goals against average stands at 0.83 prior to play this weekend.  Julian Shamsaie and Zak Mitiche have scored the two Greyhound goals this year.  UIndy has seen three of its four games on the year go into overtime as it has outshot its opponents by a 72-44 margin.
