Miners gain split with Tritons after winning nightcap in 13 innings

5/3/2014 8:26:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Doing something it had not accomplished all season, Missouri S&T's baseball team captured an extra inning contest to gain a split of its doubleheader Saturday at Missouri-St. Louis.  The Miners took the nightcap 3-1 in 13 innings after falling 12-1 in the opener.

Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South)'s two-run double with two outs in the top of the 13th broke a deadlock that had been in place since the third inning to give the Miners their first lead of the contest.   S&T then had to survive the bottom half of the inning as the Tritons got the tying runs on base, but Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) got the final two outs to preserve the victory in a game that tied the longest in Miner history.

The uprising in the 13th started with a one-out infield single by Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe)Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) followed with a hit, then after a ground out by Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) that moved the runners up, Robaska doubled down the line in left to give the Miners the lead.

A one-out error and a hit in the bottom of the 13th allowed the Tritons to get the tying run on base, but Brown got a pop fly for the second out and then retired third-place hitter Paul Richmond on a line drive to second to end the game.

The Tritons scored in the opening inning off S&T starter John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) on Michael Budka's RBI single, but S&T tied the contest in the third.  Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) drew a one-out walk, ended up a third after a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a two-out single off the bat of Brown.

Auble pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the second and another situation in the third with two runners on base without allowing a run, then pitched around an error to start the sixth with a strikeout along the way.

The Tritons had another chance to win it in the seventh after a leadoff single, but Auble retired the next three that included a strikeout of Budka with the winning run at third.

S&T, who had only two hits through the first seven innings, had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the eighth.  Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) singled with one out and after stealing second, moved along to third on a hit by Brown.  However, Bodenstab got caught off third on a ball hit by Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) and was tagged out for the second out of the inning; the Tritons were able to get out of the inning with the score still tied.

The Miners then loaded the bases in the tenth with one out but couldn't score and had two on in the 11th with one out and again came away empty.   UMSL loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) fanned Chris Mathes to keep the game going.

Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief.  Auble and Laudadio, who combined to throw the first 11 innings, allowed nine hits over that span and struck out nine between them.   The Miners finished with 10 hits in the contest.

The Miners took the lead in the opener in the fourth as Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) doubled with one out, moved to third on a hit by Portwood and scored moments later on a hit by Ulrich.

However, the Tritons answered that run and then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, a rally that began with a one-out walk to Justin Lois.  After he stole second and went to third on a throwing error, Lois stole home on the back end of a double steal to tie the game.

UMSL took the lead later in the inning when Joe Wieczkowski scored on a passed ball.

The Tritons broke the contest open in the fifth – thanks in part to a passed ball on a third strike that kept the inning alive – with a three-run outburst.  Lois drove in the first run with a hit and Wieczkowski knocked in two more with a hit later in the frame.  UMSL added four more runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Lockett had three and Karbowski two for S&T, who had 10 hits as did the Tritons but also hit into three double plays in the opener.  Starter Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) was tagged with the loss, although he did not allow an earned run during his 4 2/3 innings on the hill.

The Miners and Tritons will wrap up the weekend series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
