Quincy drops Miners in both ends of doubleheader

4/5/2014 10:29:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T dropped a pair of close contests in the first of two Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders at Quincy University, falling by scores of 2-1 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks got a home run in the fourth inning from Matthew Buck to win the opener, then scored twice in the third inning of the nightcap to take the lead for good as their pitchers held S&T's hitters to a total of nine hits on the day.

Quincy grabbed the advantage in the opening inning of the first contest on Matt Marek's sacrifice fly, but the Miners knotted the score in the second.  Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) and scored when Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) – who had his at-bat extended due to a dropped pop fly in foul territory – singled to the opposite field with two outs.

However, with two outs in the Hawk fourth, Buck belted a 1-0 pitch from Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) out of the park to give Quincy the lead with what turned out to be the final run of the first game.

The Miners managed just one hit over the final five innings, a leadoff single by Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) in the seventh.  He eventually reached third by stealing second and moving up on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded there.

S&T had another chance in the eighth when Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) drew a leadoff walk, but a double play ended that opportunity.

Robertson pitched the first seven innings and allowed just six hits and struck out two.  Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) had two of S&T's five hits in game one.

The Miners took the initial lead in the first inning of game two as Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) was hit by a pitch to start things off, moved around to third on a bunt and a fly out and came in to score on a hit by Portwood.

Quincy tied the score in the second on Buck's run-scoring double, then took the lead an inning later.  Kenny May singled to start the inning and Kory Wisdom followed with a double down the line in left that sent May to third. A wild throw on the play allowed May to come home, then Wisdom scored on a double by Mitchell Broughton.

The Hawks added another unearned run in the fifth when Marek singled in May, who walked and moved around to third after an error following a stolen base.

S&T had just four hits in the nightcap, two by Brown who had his team-high 11-game hitting streak snapped in the opener.  The Miners had only two hits after the Hawks took the lead, one in the sixth that was erased by a double play and the other in the seventh.

Starting pitcher John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) took the loss for the Miners, who dropped to 12-17 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC.  Auble struck out a season-high eight hitters in his six innings of work.

The Miners and Hawks will complete the weekend series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
