Miners break loose in game two, split twinbill with Saints

4/25/2014 7:44:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Thanks to a 14-hit breakout in game two, Missouri S&T's baseball gained a split of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at the S&T Baseball Field by downing Maryville 10-3.  The Saints blanked the Miners 8-0 in game one.

The Miners got all 14 of game two hits in the four innings in which they scored, all multiple-run innings as they reached double figures in the run column for just the third time this season.  It started in the first inning after the Saints scored twice in the top half.

Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) led things off with a double, followed by a bunt single by Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) and a double into the gap in right center by Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland).  S&T would tie the game later in the inning on an ground out by Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) that scored Brown.

In the third, the Miners took the lead by plating two more runs.  Brown got the second of his four hits with one out, then reached second on a potential double play ball hit by Lockett as the second baseman dropped the throw.  That was followed by an opposite field single by Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) that put S&T into the lead for good; Portwood singled right after that to extend the margin to 4-2.

After the Saints scored in the fourth and missed a chance to add more after loading the bases, the Miners broke the game open in the bottom  half of the inning.

Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and after being bunted over to second, scored on a hit by Bodenstab.  A hit-and-run single by Brown sent Bodenstab along to third, then Lockett singled past the third base bag to drive home the run.

Karbowski grounded out to score Brown, then Portwood followed with a hit to send home Lockett with the fourth run of the inning.

The Miners added two more in the sixth, the first scoring on a throwing error when Brown stole second to allow Bodenstab to score and the other on an hit that followed by pinch-hitter Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview).

John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) was the beneficiary of the offensive support, winning for the fourth time this season with a complete game performance and five strikeouts along the way.

Besides Brown's four hits, the Miners also got three from Bodenstab and two apiece from Lockett and Portwood, who had three runs batted in.

The opening contest belonged to the Saints from the outset, as they took a 3-0 lead in the first inning which included a three-run homer off the bat of Kyle Uhrich.  Maryville extended that lead to 5-0 in the fourth and withstood the Miners' best chance to get back in the game in the fifth.

S&T loaded the bases with two outs against Maryville starter Eric Keling on a walk and a pair of hits, but Keling got a fly ball to get out of the jam and had the lead extended with single runs over the next two innings.

The Saints (17-25, 12-18 GLVC) outhit the Miners 14-9 in game one; Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) took the loss for S&T (18-25, 12-17 GLVC).

Missouri S&T and Maryville will play again Saturday in a twinbill that will start at 1:10 p.m.  The Miner seniors will be honored prior to the start of Saturday's opener.
