Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – For the second day in succession, Missouri S&T's baseball team split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Truman State, winning the opener
3-2 behind a complete game pitching effort from
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) before losing
11-4 in the series finale.
Van Dyke held the Bulldogs to four hits in recording his and the team's first complete game of the season and finished it himself by catching Zak Larson's liner with the tying run at third in the top of the seventh.
Truman took the initial lead in the contest in the opening inning on Jarod Hahn's sacrifice fly, but the Miners tied it in the second on
Brett Yasui (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamahameha)'s squeeze bunt that scored
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS).
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the third on an RBI ground out off the bat of Chris Zrostlik, only to see S&T score in the bottom half of the frame.
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) reached on an error to start the inning, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe)'s sacrifice fly.
S&T scored what turned out to be the decisive run an inning later on a two-out hit by
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) that brought home Wobbe.
Van Dyke retired the side in order in the fifth and pitched around Blake Deaton's bunt single with two outs in the sixth as Yasui threw Deaton out trying to steal second. He gave up a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Josh DeRouse, who then ended up on third after a ground out and a wild pitch, but Van Dyke speared Larkin's liner heading up the middle to end the contest.
The Miners had five hits in the first game, with Brown getting the first two of his five hits on the afternoon.
Truman took a first inning lead in the nightcap as well, but S&T answered back with two in the bottom half of the inning. Brown led things off with a hit and Bodenstab followed by drawing a walk before
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) singled down the line to score Brown. Bodenstab scored moments later when Portwood reached on an error to give S&T the lead.
The Miners extended their advantage to 3-1 in the second when
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) crossed the plate on a double play ball, then the teams traded runs in the fourth, with S&T's scoring on a two-out single by Brown to score Ulrich.
The Bulldogs were held to two unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings by S&T starter
Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City), but tallied nine unanswered runs against five Miner relievers over the final three innings. The rally started with a two-out uprising in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3 on an RBI single by Larkin.
In the eighth, Truman got a double from Paul Trenhaile and a hit by Hahn to start the inning, which was followed by a double off the bat of Deaton with one out to put the Bulldogs back in front. Truman would plate two more runs before the inning ended and added four more in the ninth for the final margin.
The Bulldogs outhit S&T 14-8 in game two as
Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) took the loss in relief.
Missouri S&T will head to the road for its next six conference contests, beginning with Tuesday's 3 p.m. doubleheader against GLVC West Division leader Drury at Springfield's Meador Park.
