Miners complete weekend sweep over Bellarmine

3/23/2014 7:58:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – After sweeping a doubleheader from Bellarmine on Saturday, Missouri S&T's baseball team won another pair from the Knights Sunday afternoon at the S&T Baseball Field – winning the games in almost similar fashion to how it won the two a day earlier.

The Miners staged a late inning rally to pull out the opener for the second day in a row in a 10-9 game one win, then used a strong pitching effort in the nightcap as three hurlers combined to record S&T's first shutout of the year in a 3-0 victory to complete a sweep of the weekend set.

S&T fell behind 6-0 after an inning and a half in game one – with four of the runs being unearned – but started climbing back into the contest by scoring three times in the bottom of the second.

The inning began with a walk to Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) and a single by Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central).  With two outs, Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) singled home Portwood, then a wild throw from the outfield moved the runners to second and third.  Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) followed with a double just inside the third base bag that scored the two runners to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Miners drew to within a run in the third when Karbowski doubled home Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) and then scored on a hit by Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland).

Bellarmine extended its lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Andy Gehr, but S&T got that run right back in the bottom of the frame when Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) singled with one out and came around to score on Lockett's two-out double.

S&T had a golden opportunity in the sixth to tie or take the lead when it loaded the bases with one out, but Jake Hakemoller retired Portwood and Karbowski to escape the jam and keep the Knights in the lead.

In the seventh, Bellarmine extended the lead to 9-6 on Jes Staples' two-run single, but the Miners got a leadoff hit from pinch-hitter Ethan Krenning (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) to kickstart a rally that had a couple of interesting twists included.

Following a walk to Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), Reschke bunted down the third base line and a wild throw on the play allowed Krenning to come in to score.  Wobbe followed by striking out on a pitch in the dirt, but the ball went off the catcher and went up the first base line where it went off Wobbe and rolled up the line.

The contact with the ball was ruled by the umpires as unintentional and Bodenstab came in to score to make it 9-8.

Brown followed that play by singling past the third baseman to score Reschke with the tying run.

After a sacrifice bunt by Brett Yasui (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamahameha), the Knights walked Lockett intentionally to load the bases and used a five-infielder alignment to face Portwood, but he hit a deep fly ball into left center to bring home Wobbe with the game-winning run.

The Miners outhit the Knights 13-11 in the opener as five Miners had two hits apiece.  Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake), who entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of starter Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek), picked up the win.

Sunday's game one victory marked the second time this season that the Miners won a game in which they trailed by as many as five runs – the other was on Feb. 16 against Lincoln when they trailed 5-0 after the top of the first – and the first game in which they rallied for a win after being down by as many as six runs since March 27, 2003, when they came back from a seven-run deficit to win 15-13 at Southwest Baptist.

S&T scored all three of its game two runs in the third inning and left the rest to starting pitcher Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) and two relievers to complete the sweep.

The Miner rally in the third began with a one-out infield single by Brown, followed by an opposite field hit by Yasui.  Lockett then drilled a double into left that brought in Brown and Portwood singled in Yasui with the second run of the inning.   S&T's third run came on a sacrifice fly by Karbowski.

Robertson allowed just five hits and struck out three in 7 1/3 innings of work.  Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) got the final two outs in the eighth and Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) picked up his second save of the season as he pitched around a leadoff double.

S&T had nine hits to Bellarmine's six in game two; Lockett and Karbowski had two hits each for the Miners.

Missouri S&T improved to 10-11 on the season and 5-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Knights – last year's GLVC Tournament champions -- dropped to 6-11 and 1-7 in conference play.

The Miners return to action Saturday when they host Truman State in a noon doubleheader as part of a four-game series with the Bulldogs.
