Box Score (Evansville, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners saw its season come to an end with a
63-50 loss at Southern Indiana in the opening round of the 2014 Deaconess GLVC Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. S&T couldn't overcome a tough shooting first in which it trailed by as many as 21 points.
The Lady Miners (9-18), seeded 11
th, scored the first three points of the game while holding the Screaming Eagles (19-8), seeded sixth, scoreless for the first 2:30 minutes. USI took the lead on layup by Anna Hackert, but S&T regained the advantage on a layup by
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) with 15:53 left in the half. That would be its last lead of the game as the Screaming Eagles went on an 18-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 15-point lead on bucket by Autumn Miller with 7:31 remaining in the frame.
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) scored four straight points while
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) and
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) added a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 26-15 with 4:38 left in the stanza. USI struggled shooting the ball for a majority of the half but got hot in the final four minutes making 9 of 18 shots to build a 39-18 halftime lead on a three-pointer by Miller at the buzzer.
S&T was just 5 for 23 (22 percent) from the field, made just one three-pointer and was 7 of 10 at the charity stripe. It was outrebounded 23 to 18 in the half and turned it over 13 times resulting in 15 points for the Screaming Eagles. Knar finished the half with seven points while Cooper and Greenwood added four points each.
USI finished the stanza shooting 40 percent (14 for 35) from the floor, was just 2 for 9 from beyond the arc and made all nine of its free throws. Stephanie Carpenter led all scorers with nine points while Hackert and Mary O'Keefe had eight points each.
The Screaming Eagles scored eight of the first 13 points to start the second half extending their halftime lead to 24 points after a three-pointer by Carpenter five minutes in. S&T got into an offensive rhythm as Cooper and Sample scored the Lady Miners next 15 points allowing them to cut the lead to 51-38 with 10:27 left in the game. S&T made 12 of its first 15 shots to start the frame.
USI pushed the lead back to 14 points, but the Lady Miners continued to scrap eventually cutting the lead to 53-44 on a layup by
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) with 8:15 to go. That would be the closest S&T got as the Screaming Eagles answered with a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 17 points with less than three minutes to play. Carpenter had four points in the run.
The Lady Miners outrebounded USI 18-13 in the second half and shot 68 percent from the floor. They dominated the Screaming Eagles down low outscoring them 18-4 in the paint. Sample and Cooper combined for 24 points in the stanza.
S&T finished the game shooting 44 percent (20 for 45) from the floor, was 1 of 8 from beyond the arc and 9 for 14 at the foul line. Sample led the Lady Miners with 17 points while Cooper had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
USI finished the game shooting 35 percent (22 for 62) was just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc and shot 73 percent at the foul line. Carpenter led all scorers with 20 points while Hackert added 13 and O'Keefe had 10.
