Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T's baseball team picked up its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season Monday with a victory in the first game of its doubleheader at Illinois Springfield, but the Prairie Stars captured the nightcap and the series as a result with a game two win.
The Miners won
4-1 in the opener, but UIS came away with a
3-1 triumph in the second contest.
After falling behind in the opening inning of the Prairie Stars' first game at their home campus facility, the Miners took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and added two more in the sixth inning.
With one out in the fourth,
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) ended up at second base after an error was charged to the right fielder and came in to score moments later on a hit by
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central).
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe), who had walked after Lockett reached base.
Two innings later, Lockett singled to open the inning, moved to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and scored on an opposite field single by Portwood. Karbowski would eventually drive home Portwood later in the sixth with a hit for S&T's fourth run.
The rest was taken care of by starter
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), who kept the Prairie Stars in check by holding them to six hits and fanning six in a six-inning outing; the only run he allowed was unearned. Brown pitched around a one-out hit in the seventh to earn his third save of the season.
Karbowski had two of the Miners' five hits in the contest, as UIS outhit S&T 7-5.
S&T took the early advantage in the nightcap with a two-out uprising, as Lockett walked, went to third when Portwood reached on an error and scored on a hit by Karbowski. But UIS tied the score in the second on an RBI double by Alex Bradley off Miner starter
Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) and took the lead an inning later on a leadoff homer by Adam Unes.
Brooks Rohrman's RBI double in the fourth drove in the final UIS run.
The Miners missed a good scoring chance in the sixth when they had two runners on base, but wound up stranding both of them and also had the tying run at the plate in the eighth and ninth innings as well.
UIS (7-4, 3-1 GLVC) outhit the Miners in game two as well 7-6, with
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) getting two of the S&T hits. Robertson took the loss on the mound, but the Miners got 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief from
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and
Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) to keep them in the contest.
The Miners, 6-11 overall and 1-3 in GLVC action, will play their second and final GLVC series against a team from the league's Eastern Division this weekend when it hosts Bellarmine in a four-game set at the S&T Baseball Field. The doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday will begin at noon.
