Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T came away victorious in the final game of its three-game weekend series with the University of Indianapolis Sunday, holding off a late Greyhound rally to take a
5-4 win at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Miners led 5-1 going into the ninth inning, but a bases clearing double by Kenny Mahala brought UIndy to within a run with one out.
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) took over on the mound following Mahala's double and retired the final two hitters, getting Joe Trennepohl on a comebacker and Sean McCracken on a ground ball to short to save the win for
Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City).
As was the case in the first two games of the series, the Greyhounds scored in the opening inning on a two-out double by Brady Thomas. However, the Miners answered right back with four in the bottom half of the frame.
Following an infield single by
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman),
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) reached after striking out on a wild pitch.
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) followed with a double into the right field corner to score both runners and give S&T its first lead in the series. Later in the frame – after a UIndy error helped extend it –
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) singled home a pair of runs with two outs to give the Miners a 4-1 lead.
Given the lead,
Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) and
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) kept the Greyhounds off the scoreboard over the next seven innings. Robertson pitched around a two-out error in the third, then escaped a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fourth when
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) made a diving catch on a liner off the bat of Trennepohl to end the inning.
Laudadio retired the Greyhounds in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, striking out four along the way.
S&T added to its lead in the fourth when Brower led off the inning with a hit and later scored on a hit by
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) that got caught in the wind in short left and went off the glove of Trennepohl.
The Greyhounds outhit the Miners 9-7, but struck out 10 times against four Miner hurlers on the afternoon.
Missouri S&T, now 3-2 on the year, will return to action next weekend with a four-game series against St. Cloud State at the S&T Baseball Field. The teams are currently scheduled to play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon each day.
