Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Starting its season six days earlier than originally planned did not deter Missouri S&T's baseball team Sunday, as it posted a doubleheader sweep over Lincoln on a cold afternoon at the S&T Baseball Field by scores of
6-1 and
11-6.
The Miners used a four-run first to propel it to the win in game one, then overcame a 5-0 deficit before it came to bat for the first time in the nightcap and scored in every inning of the second game to complete the sweep.
S&T was able to take advantage of some wildness by Lincoln starter Joe Jungmeyer in the first inning of the opener, which included four walks in an inning in which he threw 38 pitches. The inning started with a walk to
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), then after one out walks to
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) and
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) loaded the bases,
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) ripped the first pitch he saw into the left field corner to clear the bases.
Siegel would score later in the inning on an RBI single off the bat of
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland), who had two of the Miners' five hits in the opener.
S&T added two more runs in the sixth, one coming on an RBI hit by
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and the other when Brower stole home when
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) drew a walk as Wobbe was running from first; the throw went through to second and Brower scored on the play.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) threw five shutout innings to pick up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out three, while
Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) threw the final two innings of the opener and allowed just one hit. Lincoln scored an unearned run with two outs in the seventh as the result of a throwing error.
In game two, the Blue Tigers put five runs on the scoreboard in the opening inning, but the Miners responded with three in the bottom half of the frame. Portwood's two-out single got the Miners on the scoreboard, then
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) drove in two later in the inning to bring S&T to within two.
Karbowski tied the contest in the second with a two-run single, then the Miners moved in front in the third on a sacrifice fly by Brown.
S&T scored a single run in the fourth when Robaska singled home Portwood, then tacked on three runs in the fifth after Wobbe led the inning off with a triple. He would score on a balk, then S&T scored its other two runs in the inning when Portwood reached on a fielder's choice as Bodenstab scored on the play and a wild throw allowed Brown to also cross the plate.
After Lincoln scored a run in the sixth, the Miners got one in their half of the sixth on Brown's RBI single.
The Miners outhit the Blue Tigers 13-9 in the nightcap as five players had two hits apiece. Robaska finished with three runs batted in, while Brown, Karbowski and Portwood all drove in two apiece.
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) got the win in relief of starter
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) after throwing a perfect fourth inning, while
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) picked up a save as he threw the final three frames.
