Lady Miners down Rangers 72-69 in overtime

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners needed an extra five minutes on Saturday, but it was worth it as it came away victorious 72-69 over the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) hit a long two-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in regulation to force the extra five minutes.

This game was close throughout with the largest lead being nine points by the Lady Miners (9-14, 5-10 GLVC) with just over two minutes left in the opening half. The Rangers (7-16, 3-12 GLVC) stayed in the game with their 21 offensive rebounds which they turned into 14 second chance and also scored 21 points off of S&T's 17 turnovers.

The Lady Miners led 33-24 after a layup by Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) just over a minute into the second half. UW-Parkside then rattled off the next nine points to tie the game with 15:13 to play. The two sides began trading baskets over the next four minutes before back-to-back layups by Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) and Knar gave S&T a 44-39 advantage with 11:06 to go.

The Rangers responded scoring nine of the next 11 points to take its first lead since the 12:06 mark of the opening half to take a 48-46 advantage. The Lady Miners answered right back though scoring six straight to regain a 52-48 lead with 4:26 to go.

Danielle Slivka hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one on the next possession, but S&T hit four straight free throws to extend the lead to 56-51 with 3:05 left. Parkside came right back getting a layup to cut the lead to 56-53 with less than three minutes to play. Cooper was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit both foul shots to put the Lady Miners back up by five with 2:25 remaining.

Gaby Bronson answered those free throws with her third three-pointer of the game to make it a two-point game with 2:10 left. After turnover by S&T, Slivka hit a running layup to tie the game with 1:20 to play. The Lady Miners turned it over again with less than a minute to play, but Sarah Mlachnik missed a jumper on the base line. Cooper got the rebound and tried to make an outlet pass; however, Mlachnik stole the ball and laid it in to put the Rangers up 60-58 with 0:32 remaining.

After a timeout by the Lady Miners they drove the lane, lost the ball but it went right to Knar who ran to the corner and hit a 19-footer in front of the S&T bench to tie the game. Parkside had one last chance to win the game as Tara Knapstein got off a 35-footer at the buzzer, but it was off the mark to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session both teams hit a free throw to keep the game tied at 61-61. Slivka then gave the Rangers the lead with a running jumper with 4:03 to play. Knar countered that shot with a three-pointer from just to the left of the top key. Her shot appeared to rim out, before falling through to give S&T the lead for good at 64-63. The Lady Miners then hit 4 of their next 8 attempts at the foul line to extend the lead to 68-63 with 0:29 left.

Slivka hit a layup to make it a three-point game with 0:23 left and then Parkside fouled Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) with 0:18 left. She hit 1-of-2 to put S&T ahead by four. Amber Bullock drove the length of the floor and hit a layup with 0:10 remaining to make it 69-67. The Rangers were forced to foul again and fouled McLeod who hit both free throws with 0:07 to make it 71-67. Jennifer Blunt made another layup with 0:03 left to pull Parkside within two, but Knar made 1-of-2 at the line to ice it for S&T.

The Lady Miners didn't attempt a free throw for the first 14:27 of the second half then made 10 straight over the final 5:33 of regulation. They went 9-for-16 in the overtime period though. Their only field goal of the OT session was Knar's three-pointer.

S&T finished the game shooting 47 percent (21-of-45) from the floor, went 5-for-12 from beyond the arc and shot 73.5 percent (25-of-34) at the foul line. Knar led the Lady Miners with 21 points while Cooper added 18 and Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) contributed 14 to the attack.

The Rangers finished the game shooting 24-for-68 (35.3 percent) from the field, connected on 27 percent (7-for-26) of their attempts from three and was 14-of-20 at the foul line. Slivka led all scorers with 22 points and was joined in double figures by Knapstein and Bronson with 17 and 16 points respectively.

S&T is back in action on Thursday night when it travels to Kansas City to face Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Miners are looking to avenge a 70-68 loss to the Hawks from a month ago.
