Hot second half boosts Miners to upset of No. 16 UW-Parkside

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Needless to say, everyone Missouri S&T player, coach and fan was holding his or her breath the moment Jordan Mach's last shot left his hand.

Fortunately for the Miners, Mach's three-point attempt to win the game for Wisconsin-Parkside spun out of the basket as the buzzer sounded, allowing Missouri S&T to pull off an upset of the 16th-ranked team in NCAA Division II with a wild 103-101 Great Lakes Valley Conference win Saturday afternoon.

The missed shot closed out a wild sequence in the final 30 seconds of the contest, where the Miners lost a four-point lead in the blink of an eye, only to regain the advantage just moments after that and then got the win on the miss at the horn.

S&T led 99-97 after Jimmy Gavin scored with 59 seconds to go and ran the shot clock nearly in its entirety.  After Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) missed the initial shot and Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) was unable to tip in the rebound, Mudiaga Eruteya (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) got the offensive board and was fouled with 23 seconds remaining.

Eruteya hit both shots at the line to extend the lead to four before Gavin was sent the line 10 seconds later and sank a pair to make it a two-point game again.  UW-Parkside's Colt Grandstaff then stole the inbounds pass and scored to tie the game at 101 with 11 seconds to play.

However on the ensuing inbounds pass, Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) was fouled by Grandstaff, sending him to the line with a chance to give the Miners the lead back with a shade over 10 seconds left on the clock.  Foster made both shots to put S&T back up by two, then the Miners forced the Rangers to pass the ball around on the offensive end until getting it to an open Mach in the corner by the Ranger bench.

Mach – the only starter on the two teams that did not score in double figures Saturday but who came into the contest ranked third in the GLVC in three-pointers per game – got a good look at the basket, but the potential game-winning shot spun around the inside of the rim and flew out as time expired.

The Miners' victory was bolstered by a strong shooting performance in the second half, as the Miners hit on 64.5 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes and eight-of-12 from three-point range.

UW-Parkside led the entire first half, holding as much as a 16-point lead with 8:18 to play in the opening period.  S&T, still down by 14 with 3:39 left in the half, clawed back into the contest over the remainder of the period and outscored the Rangers 18-9 to trail by only five at the break.

The Miners came flying out of the locker room at the start of the second half, scoring on their first five possessions which included four three-pointers.  A trey by Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School), who knocked down five three-pointers on the day as he scored a season-high 21 points, at the 17:08 mark gave the Miners a 59-55 lead.

Following a basket by Zygimantas Riauka, neither team led by more than three points over the next 12 minutes.  S&T trailed 82-80 with 6:41 to go, then ran off an 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the game, with Aaron Emmanuel (Brampton, Ont./LaLumiere School)'s runner in the lane putting the Miners on top at the 5:48 mark.

Zach Ellis' three-pointer out of the corner with 3:36 remaining gave the Miners their seven-point lead, but a couple of missed free throws and a key turnover during the next two minutes allowed the Rangers to tie the score, which they did on a lay-in by Andy Mazurczak with 1:44 left.

But Khan came right back down the floor and scored to put S&T back into the lead; his subsequent free throw completed the three-point play that put the Miners ahead 98-95.  After a Parkside missed shot, Khan made one of two at the line to extend the lead to four with 1:14 to play.

The Miners shot 55.2 percent from the field on the afternoon and had six players in double figures.  Besides the 21 scored by Nesbitt, Eruteya finished with 19 points, while Foster and Khan had 17 apiece.  S&T also got 16 points from Emmanuel and 10 from Ellis in the victory.

Eruteya also added six rebounds, nine assists and two blocked shots, while Nesbitt finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

Gavin led all scorers in the game with 28 points, while Mohamed Mohamed had 17 points and Riauka finished with 16.  The Rangers (19-5, 12-3 GLVC), who came into the game holding a share of the lead in the GLVC's East Division, shot 54.7 percent in the contest and made 12-of-18 from beyond the arc.

The win Saturday marked the first for the Miners (10-13, 5-10 GLVC) over a nationally-ranked team since their win at No. 2-ranked Southern Indiana on Jan. 5, 2012 and first over a ranked team at home in nearly 10 years, that coming on Feb. 28, 2004 when they beat No. 11 Northwest Missouri State 82-73.

Missouri S&T will head to the road for its next two games, beginning with Thursday's 5:15 p.m. contest against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
