Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A key to winning basketball games is making shots, which is something Missouri S&T's men's basketball team struggled to do Thursday night as it dropped a
75-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision to 19
th-ranked Lewis at Billy Key Court.
The loss, the fifth in succession for the Miners, dropped them to 9-13 overall and 4-10 in the GLVC. S&T, who came into the game as the fifth-highest scoring team in NCAA Division II, was held to its season low in points and to its worst shooting night of the season as it made only 30.5 percent of its shots from the floor.
S&T held one brief lead in the game of 11-10 after a basket by
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East), but the Flyers took the lead back just 22 seconds later on a lay-in by Jeff Jarosz. The Flyers built that lead to five, only to see the Miners tie the score at 18 at the 10:28 mark of the first half when
Mudiaga Eruteya (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) hit the second of two free throws.
But over the next five minutes, Lewis went on a 24-3 run to take a 21-point lead. While the Miners failed to make any of their seven field goal attempts during that stretch – all three of S&T's points came from the free throw line – the Flyers made eight-of-12 from the floor including three from beyond the arc.
The Miners were able to cut the lead down to 15 by halftime by holding to just one field goal over the final three minutes of the half, then dropped the lead to eight by scoring the first seven points of the second half.
Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central)'s lay-up at the 16:34 mark cut the Flyer lead to 50-42.
However, the Flyers made another huge run after the Miners made their initial surge, running off 17 consecutive points over a span of 5:16 to take a 70-44 lead with 9:08 remaining as six different Flyers scoring during that stretch.
Foster recorded his eighth double-double of the season Thursday with 18 points and 10 rebounds and moved into fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list in the process, as he passed Tim Holloway's mark of 1,571 points. Foster's 18 points increased his career total to 1,579.
Aaron Emmanuel (Brampton, Ont./LaLumiere School) also finished in double figures for S&T with 17 points.
Lewis (19-3, 11-3 GLVC) shot 51 percent from the floor for the game and had four players in double figures, led by Ryan Jackson with 14 points. The Flyers also outrebounded the Miners 42-38 and had five blocked shots in the game, four of them by Kyle Nelson.
Missouri S&T will face another ranked team Saturday, as it will take on 16
th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside in a 3 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court. The Rangers, the co-leaders in the GLVC's East Division, lost on a last-second shot Thursday 54-52 at second-ranked Drury.
