ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball will be hosting its Lady Miner Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T will welcome Central Missouri, Newman and LeMoyne-Owen to Rolla this weekend.
Friday's first game will be between Central Missouri and Newman at 5:30 p.m. The Jennies enter play this week at 0-1 after dropping their season opener at Minnesota State-Mankato last Friday 70-68. The Jens trailed by 14 at the break, but their late rally came up two points short. Jasmine Thompson led UCM with 27 points and 15 rebounds in the loss while Revonnia Howard added 13 points.
Friday's contest will be the second one of the season for Newman (1-0) as well. The Jets opened their season at home last Friday with a 52-48 win over Bethel College. Sophomore Brianna Caldwell led Newman with a career-high 23 points and hit seven 3-pointers in the victory. Senior DeKendra Ledoux added 10 points in the win. The Jets scored 35 bench points with their starters producing only 17 points.
LeMoyne-Owen is 0-1 after dropping its opener at Robert Morris University-Chicago 72-64 last Saturday. The Lady Magicians led by 12 points at the break but couldn't close out the Eagles in the second half as Robert Morris came back to take a 60-56 lead with 0:40 to play in the contest. LeMoyne-Owen scored the final four points of regulation to tie the game and force overtime but in the extra session the Lady Magicians connected on just one field goal in 12 attempts and were outscored 12-4. Tensha Wright led LOC with 20 points while Latrice Sears finished with 11 points.
S&T enters play this weekend with a mark of 2-0 after picking up an 86-71 win over Hannibal-LaGrange at home on Tuesday evening. The Lady Miners shot 58 percent for the contest and finished with four players in double figures led by
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) with 18 points.
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) chipped in with 16 while
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) had 11 and 10 points respectively.
Saturday's first game will be between LeMoyne-Owen and Newman at 2 p.m. and will be followed by Central Missouri and S&T at 4 p.m.
