Miners on road seeking to climb back into GLVC playoff race

ROLLA, Mo. – Following a weekend when it played two overtime games, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team heads on the road looking to climb back into the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoff race with contests Friday at McKendree and Sunday at Bellarmine.

The Miners lost the first overtime contest 3-2 to Missouri-St. Louis Friday, then played to a scoreless tie with Maryville Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium and bring records of 3-5-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the GLVC into play this weekend.

S&T held a pair of one-goal leads in the second half of the UMSL game, getting goals from Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) and Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), but the Tritons tied the game on both occasions and then came away victorious with a goal in the fourth minute of overtime.  On Sunday, the Miners outshot Maryville, but were unable to get one into the net and had to settle for the scoreless draw.

James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional), who owns a goals against average of 1.58 on the season, picked up his third shutout of the year on Sunday.

Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway) leads S&T in scoring with five points on the year, while Fuchs and Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) pace the Miners in goals with two apiece.

McKendree has won two of its last three games and had a scoreless tie with Lewis in between the two victories; the Bearcats are 3-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the GLVC.  McKendree has won just once at home this season in five tries, but that win came in their most recent home contest when it beat Saint Joseph's 4-0.

Callum Kiddell and CJ Cerna leads the Bearcats with three goals apiece, while Cerna also has two assists for a team-high eight points.  Goalkeeper Scott Armistead has started in nine of McKendree's ten games in goal with a 0.71 goals against average and 40 saves.

Bellarmine, meanwhile, has lost its last three contests to fall below the Miners in the GLVC standings at 2-5-1 and is 4-6-1 overall prior to its Friday home contest with Drury.  The Knights, who lost all three of those games by one goal, are led in scoring by Dan Schiavi with five goals and three assists for 13 points and Kai Qualah with five goals and an assist.  Blake Hunter and Tommy Hebert have shared time in goal and have a combined goals against average of 1.07.
