ROLLA, Mo. – With a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament locked up, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will close out its 2014 regular season schedule Wednesday night when it faces 24th-ranked Drury in Springfield, Mo. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
The Miners clinched their spot in the conference tournament Sunday when they knocked off Rockhurst 1-0 at the S&T Soccer Field.
Bryce Phillips (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS) scored on a shot from about 35 yards away in the game's 67
th minute for the only goal of the contest, while
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) recorded his seventh shutout of the season by making three saves.
Missouri S&T's defense has stood out in this recent run – one that has seen the Miners win four straight games and five of their last six – as S&T lowered its team goals against average to 1.21 on the year. Holloway's goals aganst average stands at 1.05 after posting a pair of shutouts over the weekend and he had made 66 saves this season.
The Miner defense will be tested Wednesday by one of the GLVC's top offensive units, as the Panthers rank third in the conference in scoring with 2.38 goals per game. Alec Nagel leads Drury in scoring with ten goals and an assist for 21 points, while Jack Mathis has tallied eight goals and Nick Ammann seven. Nagel's ten goals are tied for third in the GLVC.
Goalkeeper Logan Ponche has an 0.70 goals against average with 35 saves and has recorded seven shutouts of his own.
Drury, 13-3 overall and 11-3 in the GLVC, dropped to 24
th from 13
th in the NSCAA Division II rankings after losing 1-0 to Rockhurst Friday; the Panthers bounced back with a 3-0 win Sunday over William Jewell. They have scored at least two goals in 13 of their 16 contests this season.
The Miners' top scorer heading into Wednesday's match is
Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau), who has four goals and five assists for 13 points.
Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway), who had one of the Miner goals in the victory at William Jewell, has scored twice with three assists.
Missouri S&T will play its first GLVC Tournament game away from home on Sunday against an opponent to be determined after play across the league is completed on Wednesday. Drury is one of those possible foes as the Panthers currently sit second in the standings, while the Miners are in seventh place.
