ROLLA, Mo. – Winning seven of the 11 contested events Friday night, Missouri S&T's swimming team came away with a
118-87 victory over Lewis in its home opener at the S&T Pool.
The Miners got two winning performances apiece from
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and
Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) in Friday's meet, as Glaser won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:03.29 and 500-freestyle in 4:43 flat and Kerc had firsts in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.68 seconds and 100-free in 47.41. The duo also bookended the Miners' victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the night, as Kerc opened the event with a 46.98 over the first 100 yards and Glaser posted a 49.37 in the final 100.
They were joined by
Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) and
Eirik Nielsen (Stathelle, Norway/Toppidrettsgynmaset) on the winning relay team.
Nielsen also had a first place finish in the 200-butterfly in a time of 1:56.54, while
Stuart Mossop (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) had the seventh winning performance for the Miners in the 200-individual medley in 1:58.35.
Second place finishes were recorded by Sponsler in the 200-freestyle in 1:47.25,
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) in the 200-IM in 1:58.35 and 200-breaststroke in 2:08.96,
Caleb Hathaway (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian) in the 200-butterfly in 1:58.45 and
Mike Rouleau (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) in the 200-backstroke in 1:58.89.
The Miners' 400-yard medley relay team of
Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), Chavez, Nielsen and
Jon Anderson (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Senior) also placed second with a time of 3:32.30.
Nate Endebrock (Colbert, Wash./Riverpoint Academy) had a third place showing in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:50.02, as did Rouleau in the 200-freestyle in 1:49.93, Sponsler in the 100-freestyle in 48.72 seconds and Mossop in the 200-backstroke in 1:59.88.
The Miners' next competition is slated for Nov. 1 when it takes part in the Lindenwood Quad in St. Charles, Mo.
