Women’s basketball heads to Indiana looking for first road win

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit the road this week traveling to Evansville, Ind., for a matchup with the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana. S&T is in search of its first true road win of the season and get back to the .500 mark both overall and in league play.

In their last outing the Lady Miners snapped a four-game losing streak with a 79-65 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday in Rolla. The game was tight for the first 23 minutes before S&T used runs of 8-0 and 16-4 to pull away from the Pumas. The Lady Miners had five players score in double figures led by a career-high 17 points from Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover). Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) each tallied 14 points while Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) added 11 and Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) had 10. S&T shot a season-high 53.7 percent (29-for-60) from the floor and was 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Miners are averaging 70.3 points per game and led in scoring by Mia Wesley (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) with 17.1 points per game while Knar is averaging 13.6 per contest. Knar is currently ranked second in the GLVC and 10th in Division II in three-point field-goal percentage at 48.3 percent. She also leads the league in three-point field-goals made per game with 2.6. Cooper and Sample are just shy of the double figure mark averaging 9.9 and 9.8 points per game respectively.

Southern Indiana comes into Thursday's contest with a record of 8-2 and is 2-0 after earning road victories at Rockhurst and William Jewell this past weekend. The Screaming Eagles flew past the Hawks last Friday in a 70-44 behind13 points and 11 rebounds from Anna Hackert. She was one of four Screaming Eagles in double figures and was joined by Libby Ogden with 12 points while Autumn Miller and Nicole Hazemi had 11 each.

On Sunday Hackert scored a career-high 36 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the floor and was 14-of-17 at the foul line in USI's 84-81 win at William Jewell. She also added 14 rebounds in the contest. Ogden was the only other player in double figures with 17 points.

The Screaming Eagles lead the GLVC in scoring with 85.2 points per game, rebounding (44.8 per game) and in three-point field goals made with 7.7 per contest. As a team, they're shooting 43.5 percent from the field, have connected on 77 of their 207 attempts from three and have made 73.4 percent of their free throws. Hackert leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 20.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She is second in the league in scoring.

The Lady Miners have won 12 of the 13 meetings all-time against Southern Indiana and are 7-0 against the Screaming Eagles in Evansville.
S&T has won four straight in the series. The last three meetings at USI have been decided by a total of 12 points.
