Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T made a first half goal stand up as it captured its first road victory of the 2013 season Friday night, winning a
1-0 decision over Southern Indiana in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Miners got their goal at the 18:56 mark of the first half when
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) scored an unassisted goal. S&T had some other opportunities in the opening half as it got four corner kick chances and had a couple of instances in which it was called for offsides.
The scales tilted in USI's direction after the break, as the Screaming Eagles had several chances in the early stages of the period, but S&T goalkeeper
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) turned all of those efforts away. He made a save on a try by Corey Fundenberger at the 63:13 mark, which turned out to be the last shot USI would have on goal in the contest.
The Screaming Eagles had one last chance in the final seconds as Miles Durham headed a ball that went off an S&T defender wide of the net. It allowed them to have a corner kick opportunity, but time ran out right after the attempt was made.
USI (2-2-1, 1-2 GLVC) held a 16-8 advantage in shots for the night, including a 10-2 difference in the second half. Jackson turned away all all seven shots on goal to record his second shutout of the season and giving him 11.5 for his career.
Missouri S&T (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) will wrap up its weekend road trip Sunday when it faces Illinois Springfield in a 2:30 p.m. game in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) dropped their first conference game of the year Friday in a 1-0 loss to No. 16-ranked Drury.
