Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Stepping outside of Great Lakes Valley Conference play for a day, Missouri S&T's bats were quieted by a trio of Southwest Baptist pitchers as the Miners dropped both ends of the twinbill by scores of
4-2 and
4-1 at the S&T Baseball Field.
S&T had a total of only seven hits in the two games combined and never held a lead in either contest, falling to 10-18 on the season as a result
After three scoreless innings in the opener – including a top of the first in which SBU had the bases loaded and one out but couldn't get a run across -- the Bearcats broke on top by scoring four times off S&T starter
Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest). The outburst started with a one-out single by Spencer Blacksher, then three batters later, Will Swofford singled home a pair of runs to break the scoreless tie.
The Bearcats pushed two more runs across before the inning ended before S&T got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame.
With two outs,
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) drew a walk and
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) followed with an infield single; a wild throw on the play moved the runners ahead to second and third.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) then hit a ball that second baseman Christian Binger couldn't handle, allowing both runners to come across the plate.
However, Morrison was stranded on second and the Miners got the tying runs on base in the seventh, but couldn't bring them home.
SBU outhit the Miners 7-3 in the opener, with Brown,
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) and
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) getting the hits for the Miners.
The Bearcats grabbed a quick lead in the second game, going in front on Bo Helsel's one-out opposite field triple to score the first run and Helsel scoring on an infield out. SBU scored two more in the fifth before the Miners got on the scoreboard in the sixth.
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), who had two of S&T's four hits in game two, led off with an infield hit and stole second with outs, then
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) singled between the first and second basemen to bring him around to score.
The Miners got the tying run to the plate in the sixth and on base in the seventh, but couldn't get the key hit off Zack Whitaker in either inning after he took over for Rolla native Cole Roark, who got the win for SBU with his work over the first 5 2/3 innings.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), the first of five pitchers employed by the Miners in the second game, took the loss.
The Miners return to GLVC play Saturday when they open a four-game series against West Division co-leader Quincy in a noon doubleheader.
