Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T matched its largest run output in an inning this season as it routed Maryville
11-0 in the first game of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, but the Saints gained a split of the weekend series by capturing the nightcap
5-3.
The Miners scored eight times in the fifth inning to break open the first game, matching the eight scored in games against Hannibal-LaGrange and McKendree last month. That was all
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) needed, as he recorded his first career shutout with a two-hit, complete game effort to improve his record to 3-2 on the season.
S&T grabbed the lead in the third on back-to-back doubles with two outs from
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) and
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland), then sent 12 hitters to the plate in the fifth to put the eight runs on the scoreboard.
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) led off the inning with a hit and
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) followed by drawing a walk.
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), who was unable to bunt the runners over on the first two strikes, proceeded to hit an opposite field single to drive in Bodenstab.
Boxell bunted his way on to load the bases and Lockett singled to drive in Adams to bring about a pitching change from the Saints.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) drew a walk from Kolby O'Dowd to force in a run, then
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) hit into a fielder's choice to allow Boxell to score and
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) singled to drive home Lockett.
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul)'s RBI single and a two-run double by Adams closed out the scoring for the Miners in the fifth.
S&T added two more runs in the seventh as one scored on a double play ball and the other on a double off the bat of Boxell.
Boxell and Lockett had three hits apiece for S&T in the opener as the Miners outhit the Saints 14-2. Korn had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter in his performance on the mound.
In game two, the Saints grabbed the lead in the second inning on Kyle Kinyon's two-run single with two outs and scored twice in the third as well after the Miners got on the scoreboard in the top of that inning.
Following a leadoff error and a fielder's choice, Wobbe doubled into the left field corner to bring home Adams with the Miners' first run. S&T scored again in the fifth after Wobbe singled with two outs and came around on a double by Boxell.
The Miners closed to within a run in the sixth when Morrison, who led off the inning with a hit, scored on an infield out by Coan. However, S&T got only one runner as far as second base over the final three innings and the Saints were able to tack on an insurance run in the seventh.
S&T outhit the Saints 7-5 in the second game as Morrison, Brown and Wobbe all had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was tagged with the loss.
The Miners, who went to 10-16 overall and 9-9 in GLVC play with Sunday's split, will go outside the conference Tuesday to host Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m. at the S&T Baseball Field. S&T returns to conference play Saturday when it hosts Quincy in the start of a four-game series.
