Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team kept itself right in the mix for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon by taking the first two games of its series with William Jewell at the S&T Baseball Field, winning by scores of
6-4 and
10-2.
The wins moved the Miners to 17-13 in the GLVC and kept them in the middle of a mad scramble for one of the eight spots in the conference tournament with six league games remaining.
In the opener, the Cardinals got a leadoff double from Brian Rezin and a bunt single by Tom Herrera, but
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run in large part by picking Herrera off first. S&T then grabbed the early advantage as
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) hit a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the inning.
The Miners added to the lead in the second when
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) singled with one out and moved to third on
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul)'s double.
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) fouled out, but as the first baseman was going away from the infield to make the catch, Wobbe tagged up and scored on the play to give the Miners a 2-0 lead.
Herrera tied the game with a two-run homer in the third, then the Cardinals took the lead in the fourth on Zach Tyson's two-out RBI single. William Jewell extended their advantage in the sixth on Jordan Rice's leadoff homer, but the Miners put together their decisive rally when they came to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) opened the inning with a hit, which was followed by a walk to
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and a bunt single by
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) to load the bases.
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) singled home a run and Wobbe blooped a single just inside the right field line to tie the game and knock Cardinal starter Drew Mitrisin out of the game.
After the pitching change and the first out of the inning, Rich dropped a bunt down the third base line to bring home the go-ahead run. Coan homered to lead off the eighth for the final S&T run.
Auble pitched in and out of trouble through the first seven innings to get the win, while
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) picked up his school record 21
st career save with two scoreless innings of relief.
The Miners outhit the Cardinals 14-12 in the game with three coming off the bat of
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage).
S&T got on the scoreboard in the opening inning of game two as well, as Brown and Lockett had back-to-back singles with one out and Morrison drove in Brown with a sacrifice fly. William Jewell tied the score in the third on an RBI single by Rezin – who had six hits in the doubleheader – but S&T took the lead back in the bottom half when Rich scored on a double play ball.
The Miners added to their lead in the fourth with a two-out uprising that began with a Wobbe double. Coan followed with a hit to score Wobbe and reached second when the ball got past the left fielder. Moments later, Rich drove in Coan to give the Miners a three-run lead.
S&T put two more runs on the board in the fifth on an RBI double by Portwood and another scoring on an error, then put the game away with a four-run sixth. Coan's sacrifice fly brought home the first run, then a throwing error allowed two more runs to cross the plate before another RBI hit by Portwood scored the final run of the inning.
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) went the distance on the mound for the Miners to improve to 5-3, giving up only six hits – only two after the third inning – and striking out three. The Miners had 13 hits in support of him, with Rich leading the way with three.
The Miners (18-22 overall) and Cardinals (18-24) will wrap up their series with a doubleheader Monday that begins at noon at the S&T Baseball Field.
