Golden Bears hand Miners doubleheader setback at Metrodome

3/8/2013 12:03:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Missouri S&T's baseball team dropped its final two games in the Metrodome Classic Friday morning, dropping decisions of 5-1 and 2-1 to Concordia-St. Paul.

The Golden Bears took advantage of three S&T errors to win the opener, then rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to overtake the Miners to complete the sweep and drop S&T to 0-7 on the season.

In the first game, the Miners committed two errors on one play to allow Concordia-St. Paul to take the lead.  Following a single and double with one out, Paul Giel hit a grounder to third and got Mick Sawinski caught in a rundown between third and home.  However, the throw back to third was wild, allowing two runs to score and Giel ended up at third as the ball went past the left fielder as well.

Moments later, Giel scored on Jared Kramer's hit to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead.

S&T missed a chance to cut into the lead in the bottom half of that inning – it didn't score after having runners on second and third with one out – but got one of the runs back in the third after Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) drew a leadoff walk.  He would steal second, go to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch by Adam Kramer.

However, S&T would not get another hit in the game until the seventh inning, which came after the Golden Bears tacked on two more runs.

Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had two of the Miners' three hits in the first game, as S&T was outhit 6-3 in the contest.  Thomas Laudadio went the distance on the mound for the Miners and took the loss despite fanning four hitters and allowing only the six hits.  Three of the five Concordia-St. Paul runs were unearned.

Missouri S&T got the lead in the second inning of the nightcap as it loaded the bases on three bunt singles to start the inning.  Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) bunted his way on to start things off, then Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) and Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) – both of whom were trying to sacrifice runners over –beat out their bunts to fill the bases.

With one out, Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) hit a ball back to the mound, but the throw by pitcher Andy Fagely pulled the shortstop off the bag at second which allowed Brown to score.  However, a double play that followed ended the chance for the Miners to add to the lead, which S&T would cling to heading into the sixth inning.

Miner starter John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) retired 10 straight Golden Bear hitters heading into the sixth, but walked T.J. Obermeyer to start the inning and hit Eric Fasnacht with a 1-2 pitch to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base.  A wild pitch moved the runners up, but Auble got Kyle Dalton to hit a grounder to Lockett at second and he got pinch-runner Alex Eernisse at the plate.

Following a stolen base by Dalton, Greg Larpenter singled through a drawn-in infield to score the two runners and put Concordia-St. Paul in front, then Fagely, who set down 11 straight Miners through the middle of the game, retired S&T in order in the seventh to close out the win.

Auble, who took the loss for S&T, allowed just four hits and struck out three in the 5 1/3 innings he worked.  The Miners outhit the Golden Bears 5-4 in game two as five different Miners had hits

The Miners will return to action Wednesday, as they will face William Woods in a single game at 2 p.m. at the S&T Baseball Field.  Missouri S&T will begin its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule at home next Saturday (March 16) when it hosts McKendree University.
