Miners take pair from No. 12 Eagles, complete sweep of weekend set

3/23/2013 7:18:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T completed an impressive weekend sweep of the nation's 12th-ranked team Saturday, routing Southern Indiana 8-2 in game one and coming from behind to take the nightcap 8-4 after falling behind by four runs in the opening inning.

The Miners overcame the four-run deficit and then scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to improve to 6-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and 7-9 overall.

Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) drew a walk from Adam Carver to open the ninth inning and Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), on an 0-2 pitch, singled to the opposite field to put runners on the corners.  A wild pitch by Shaw scored Rich with the go-ahead run, then after a walk to Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland), back-to-back hits by Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) drove in runs to add to the S&T advantage.

Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) added a sacrifice fly to score Morrison with the final run of the inning.  Brown, the fourth Miner pitcher in the nightcap, set the Screaming Eagles (11-7, 2-6 GLVC) down in order to complete the sweep for S&T.

Southern Indiana got the jump on the Miners in the opening inning of game two, scoring four times with two outs to take the lead.  Colton White's RBI single put USI in front, then the Eagles added a run on a hit by Andrew Cope and two unearned runs followed off S&T starter John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South).

Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) drove in Coan, who reached on an error with one out, to get the Miners on the scoreboard in the second.

S&T took advantage of some sloppy play by the Screaming Eagles to tie the game in the middle innings.  A wild pickoff throw by reliever Carver in the fifth allowed two runs to score to cut the lead to one, then a pair of errors by USI led to the game-tying run, driven in on a fielder's choice by Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North).

After tying the score, the Miners escaped a big jam in the bottom of the sixth as USI loaded the bases on three hits, but Auble got Kyle Kempf to hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) threw a scoreless seventh inning and Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) did likewise in the eighth, earning his first collegiate victory in the process.

USI outhit the Miners 12-7 in the second game, with Morrison and Brown getting two hits apiece for S&T.  The first four of the Miners' eight runs in the game were unearned tallies.

In the first game, the Miners fell behind in the opening inning on Colton White's sacrifice fly, but answered with three-run outbursts in the third and fourth innings to take the lead.

USI starter David Toth set down the first seven Miners in order to start the game, but Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South)'s one-out double down the left field line got the rally going.  Boxell walked and Rich singled to load the bases, then Wobbe drove in Robaska with a sacrifice fly.

Lockett followed with a triple into the right field corner that scored Boxell and Rich to give the Miners a 3-1 lead.

Harrison Carr hit a home run for the Screaming Eagles to lead off their half of the third, then USI loaded the bases with two outs.  However, Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) fanned Bryce Shoulders to escape the jam, after which the Miners tallied three unearned runs in the fourth to break the game open.

A walk to Brown, followed by a hit by Bodenstab and an error on a sacrifice bunt by Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) loaded the bases with nobody out, then Robaska drove in Brown with a hit that fell in front of Carr in left.  An error followed that brought home Bodenstab and Rich followed that with a sacrifice fly to score the third run of the inning.

S&T added to its lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Boxell.

Laudadio went the first five innings to pick up the win, allowing seven hits and striking out four.  Dunsford threw two scoreless innings to wrap up the opener, a game in which the Screaming Eagles outhit S&T 9-8.

Bodenstab and Robaska had two hits apiece for S&T, while Boxell drove in three of the Miners' eight runs.

The Miners are scheduled to return to action Wednesday with a non-conference game against Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
