Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team struggled throughout the afternoon with keeping McKendree off the basepaths and the scoreboard, suffering losses in both games of Saturday's doubleheader by scores of
6-2 and
8-5 at a chilly S&T Baseball Field.
The visiting Bearcats scored in nine of the 16 innings played Saturday, accumulating 22 hits and drawing 13 walks along the way. McKendree led from start to finish in the opener, then took the lead for good in the nightcap after scoring four times in the fourth inning.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Bearcats scored in four consecutive innings to take a 6-0 lead. The guests took a 1-0 lead on Jake Kline's RBI single in the second, then added two runs in the third and fourth innings and another in the fifth.
The Miners broke up Sam Lidisky's shutout in the sixth on a bunt single by
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) – which ended a run of 16 consecutive hitters set down by the McKendree lefthander – followed by a hit by
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and a two-run double off the bat of
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland).
Lidisky got out of the inning with a strikeout, then pitched around a pair of two-out hits in the seventh to get the complete game.
Wobbe had two of S&T's six hits in the opener, as the Bearcats outhit the Miners 13-6. S&T starter
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) took the loss.
The Miners spotted McKendree a run in the first in game two, but answered back with three in the bottom half of the inning.
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and stole second, then moved to third on a ground out and scored on a hit by Lockett.
Later in the inning after a walk to
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla),
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) hit a ball down the third base line that was fielded by Kline, but his throw to first was late and wild, allowing and Morrison to score to put S&T in front.
The Bearcats got one of the runs back in the third, only to see the Miners tally one in the bottom of that inning when Coan hit into a fielder's choice to score Lockett.
But an inning later, the Bearcats put a four-spot on the scoreboard to take the lead for good. Tony Kossina's one-out single put McKendree in the lead and the Bearcats added to it with single runs in the fifth and sixth. In the meantime, the Miners – who had runners on base in every inning -- continued to have their opportunities doused as they grounded into double plays in three straight innings, twice in innings after getting a pair of walks to begin matters.
S&T did get a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Morrison and got the tying run to the plate, but McKendree reliever Josh Tonozzi, in his fourth inning of work, got out of the jam to preserve the win and twinbill sweep for the Bearcats.
The Miners, who swept Friday's doubleheader from the Bearcats, got two hits apiece from Lockett and Morrison in the second game, but were outhit 9-7.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), the S&T starter in the nightcap, was tagged with the loss on the mound.
Missouri S&T, 3-9 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will open a four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader at Southern Indiana.
