Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – A seventh inning uprising allowed Missouri S&T to complete a sweep of its first Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader of the 2013 season Friday, as the Miners scored four times in their last at-bat to pull out a
9-8 win over McKendree at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Miners took a
13-0 decision in the opener on
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla)'s four-hit shutout.
Trailing 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Miners were the beneficiaries of a walk, an error and another walk to load the bases before the first out was recorded.
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) delivered a two-run double to cut the lead to one, then following an intentional walk to
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney),
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) drew a four-pitch walk from reliever A.J. Wise to force home the tying run.
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North), who hit a grand slam in his last at-bat in the opener, hit a chopper over the head of third baseman Jake Kline to bring home Coan with the game-winning run.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair, as the Bearcats scored in the first and the Miners tied it an inning later on
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage)'s sacrifice fly. McKendree regained the lead with three runs in the third – two scoring on an error – but the Miners scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up again.
S&T loaded the bases on walks to Boxell and
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and a bunt single by
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), then
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) singled off the third baseman to drive in a pair. The Miners scored their third run of the frame on a double play, then grabbed a 5-4 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Rich.
McKendree regained the lead with three in the fifth and added an unearned run in the sixth, setting the stage for the Miners' rally in the seventh inning.
Each team finished with 10 hits in the opener, with Boxell getting three hits for S&T.
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) picked up the win in relief for the Miners.
The story of game one was the pitching of Bowe, who allowed only four hits and fanned six in his shutout effort. None of the six Bearcat runners reached third base in the contest.
Bowe was backed by an offensive effort where the Miners scored in five of their six innings at the plate as the game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule. S&T scored single runs in each of the first two innings, scoring on an infield single by Morrison in the first and an RBI groundout by Rich in the second, then extended the lead with two in the third on runs drive in by
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) and Coan.
The Miners broke the game open with a run in the fifth and an eight-run sixth, highlighted by Boxell's grand slam to close the scoring.
S&T finished with only eight hits in the opener, but also drew eight walks from a trio of McKendree pitchers.
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) had two hits and drove in a pair for S&T, while Morrison and Brown also had two hits apiece.
The Miners (3-7, 2-0 GLVC) will face McKendree (5-4, 0-2 GLVC) in another doubleheader at noon Saturday at the S&T Baseball Field.
