Box Score (Arkadelphia, Ark.) – In a game of runs it was Henderson State who had the last one ending the game on a 9-2 handing the Missouri S&T Lady Miners a
72-68 loss and its third straight defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark. The game featured 14 ties and eight lead changes with neither side holding a lead larger than six points.
Henderson State (7-3) dominated the glass in this particularly in the second half. The Lady Reddies had 28 rebounds in the stanza, 10 of which came on the offensive end, as they outrebounded the Lady Miners (4-5) by a 28-to-15 margin. S&T had just one offensive rebound in the second half.
Despite those struggles on the glass S&T led for a majority of the second half, but couldn't put HSU away. The Lady Miners held a 59-53 lead after a pair of free throws by
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) with 8:13 to play in the contest.
The Lady Reddies countered with a 9-2 run getting six points from Aungelique Sledge to regain the lead at 62-61 almost two minutes later. This time it was S&T's turn to respond and it did scoring five of the next six points to grab a 66-63 with less than five minutes to play.
After that Henderson went on its game deciding run. Taylor Washington started it with two free throws. The Lady Miners had several opportunities to get stops down the stretch, but everytime the Lady Reddies got the rebound and were able to either score or get fouled. Tiara Davis hit 1-of-2 to tie the game and then on the next possession Krystal Beachum hit a layup to put HSU back in front.
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) tied the game on the ensuing possession when she hit a spinning layup; however, that would be the last points S&T would score. Davis then put the Lady Reddies ahead for good with a layup at the two-minute mark. The Lady Miners had two chances over the next minute to tie or take the lead, but Sample missed on a layup and then Knar missed a three-pointer in transition with 1:12 to play.
Sledge then made 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it a three-point lead with 1:11 left. On its next possession S&T turned it over when
Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) tried to connect with
Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) on the wing. The Lady Miners then fouled Davis with 0:29 left and she hit 1-of-2 to extend the margin to four.
S&T struggled to get into its offense and Wesley couldn't hit a running jumper with six seconds left and Sledge got the rebound
to end the game.
The Lady Miners were led in scoring by Knar with 22 points while Wesley and Sample added 11 apiece. S&T shot 37 percent (25-for-67) from the field and was 13-of-16 at the foul line, but made just five of its 26 attempts from three.
Henderson State had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Sledge with 16. Beachum finished with 14 while Davis had 12 and Jasmine Settles added 11. The Lady Reddies were 24-of-66 (36.4 percent) from the field, shot 35 percent (7-for-20) from three and made just 17 of its 30 attempts at the foul line.
The Lady Miners won't play again until Friday, Jan. 3, when they host the University of Indianapolis at 5:30 pm. That game will kick off the home portion of S&T's GLVC slate.
