Flyers too much for Miners

11/9/2013 9:08:00 PM

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners were unable to slow down the high flying Lewis offense in its 3-1 (16-25, 28-26, 15-25, 22-25) loss on Saturday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Flyer trio of Lauren O'Brien, Kim Vertin and Alexis Davito combined for 53 of team's 65 kills in the contest.

The Miners (13-14, 8-6 GLVC) played from behind for a majority of the opening set as the Flyers (19-8, 12-2 GLVC) raced out to an eight point lead midway through and eventually stretched the lead to 10 points late in the frame. S&T fought off two set points, but couldn't keep the rally going as Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) committed an error to end the set 25-16.

The second set was tied at 9 when Lewis began to gain some separation with an 11-5 run to grab a 20-14 advantage. The Miners fought back with four straight points and forced the Flyers to take a timeout after a kill by Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West). S&T kept the pressure on cutting the lead to 22-21 on a block by Luther and Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ). Lewis countered scoring two of the next three points and had set point at 24-22. The Miners responded with three straight points to take their first lead of the set on a block by Haslag and Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) to make it 25-24. This time it was the Flyers turn to answer, and they did scoring back-to-back points to regain the advantage setting up their third set point. S&T wouldn't go away though as a service error tied it and then Wright responded with a kill to put the Miners up 27-26. They went onto win the set when Vertin committed an error to end it.

S&T stormed out of the gates in set three scoring the first five points, but Lewis responded with five straight of its own to even it up. The two sides then began to exchange points and were still tied at 10 when the Flyers hit the Miners with 12-2 run including eight straight to take control of the set and eventually win it 25-15.

The fourth set started out like the previous one with S&T scoring four straight points to start, but once again Lewis had an answer scoring 11 of the next 12 to grab an 11-5 lead. That lead grew to 19-13 before the Miners began to rally scoring four of the next five to close the gap to 20-17. The Flyers broke the run with a kill from Morgan Cebula to push the margin back to four points, but S&T hung tough getting to within 23-21 on a kill by Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood). Lewis was the first to reach match point on a block by Davito and Alexis Barea. The Miners staved off the first point on a kill by Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit), but couldn't fight off a second as Davito ended the match with a kill.

S&T finished the match with 47 kills, but committed 28 errors to finish the match with an attack percentage of .101. Wright led the Miners with 13 kills while Moon had eight. Tarvin and Luther finished with seven kills apiece. Plunk had 36 assists and Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) finished with 24 digs.

Lewis hit .274 percent (65k/17e/175ta) for the match. Barea dished out 56 assists while Nicole Yuede had 27 digs.

S&T returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m.
