S&T rolls past Blue Jays behind balanced attack

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners won its 12th straight season opener riding a balanced attack to an 85-52 win over Westminster on Friday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T (1-0) shot just under 50 percent for the contest and connected on 45 percent of its attempts from behind the arc.

The game was tight for the first two and a half minutes before the Lady Miners began to pull away with an 18-8 run spanning seven minutes to lead 23-13 midway through the first half. The lead never dipped below double digits as S&T led by as many as 22 points in the opening stanza.

Mia Wesley (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) had an impressive debut for the Lady Miners knocking down 5 of her 11 shots and was 3-for-6 from three to lead all scorers with 13 points at the break. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) contributed eight to the attack while Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) and Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) finished with six each.

S&T started the second half where it left in the first scoring 13 of the first 15 points of the second half to extend the lead to 30 six minutes in. That lead eventually grew to 37 points on three-pointer by Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) in the closing minutes of the contest.

The Lady Miners outrebounded the Blue Jays 44-27 and dished out 20 assists in the game to just 14 turnovers. S&T also blocked seven shots in the contest. Wesley led all scorers with 18 points. Knar dropped home 16 while Cooper and Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) finished with 14 and 10 points respectively. Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had eight rebounds off the bench.

The Lady Miner bench outscored Westminster 37-21 and turned 17 Blue Jay turnovers into 20 points.

Westminster was led in scoring by Leigh Ann Lutz and Jen Herndon with 11 points apiece.

S&T is back in action next Friday when it hosts Minnesota Duluth at 3 p.m., at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
