11/16/2013 11:20:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time in three games, Missouri S&T cleared the 100-point mark as it concluded its season opening homestand Saturday night with a 109-98 victory over Robert Morris-Springfield at Billy Key Court.

The Miners had a 55 percent shooting night from the floor and was able to stave off a second half rally effort by the Eagles, who had closed a 15-point S&T lead down to three with a little over five minutes remaining.

After the teams swapped the lead in the early going, the Miners took the lead for good at 12-10 on Aaron Emmanuel (Brampton, Ont./LaLumiere School)'s layup at the 15:12 mark of the first half. S&T pushed the lead out to 10 over the next seven minutes, going up 31-21 on Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School)'s three-pointer.

The Miners would lead by 12 in the final moments of the first half, but a pair of three-pointers by Denzell Walker – who led all scorers with 33 points – in the final nine seconds of the half cut that advantage in half by the intermission.

But early in the second half, the Miners got the margin back into double figures on Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East)'s three-pointer at the 17:24 mark. Following a pair of free throws by Walker, the Miners embarked on a 11-4 spurt that ended with a Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) lay-in with 14:23 to go, giving S&T its largest lead of 15 at 68-53.

S&T still led by 85-71 with 8:19 to go, but a 13-2 run by the Eagles capped by a Jordan Maxwell fast break layup got RMU-Springfield back to within three with 5:18 remaining. Khan hit two free throws on the Miners' next trip down the floor, then scored on a driving layup to get the lead back to seven a short time later.

Khan and Foster were among 10 players in the contest, five on each side, to score in double figures. Foster led the Miners with 26 points as he recorded his second straight double-double, while Khan finished with a career-high 20 on seven-of-eight shooting from the floor.

Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) finished with 16 points, while Zuikov added 14 and Emmaunel a career-best 13 as the latter two had their first double figure scoring performances as a Miner.

Besides the 33 points scored by Walker, Jared Wiggins added 18 points and Maxwell 17 to lead the Eagles (4-5).

The Miners outrebounded RMU-Springfield 39-25 for the night and went 35-of-46 from the free throw line as they improved to 2-1 on the year.

S&T will head to the road for the first time on Tuesday as it plays Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
