Lady Miners host Minnesota Duluth and Arkansas-Monticello this weekend

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners season opening four game homestand continues this week with visits from the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms. The Lady Miners will square off against the Bulldogs on Friday at 3 p.m. and then face the Cotton Blossoms at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening.

S&T opened its season last Friday with an 85-52 victory over Westminster running its streak to 12 straight season opening wins under Alan Eads and improved to 26-14 all-time in those contests. The Lady Miners had four players reach double figures in scoring led by junior transfer Mia Wesley (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram)'s 18. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) dropped in 16 while Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) added 14 and Jaaron Kassanavoid (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) finished with 10.

S&T connected on 49 percent (30-for-61) of its field goal attempts and was 9-of-20 (45 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Miners outrebounded the Blue Jays by a 44-to-27 margin and had 20 assists to just 14 turnovers.

Friday's game will be the first game of the season for Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs return 10 players off of last year's squad including three of their top four returning scorers. Katrina Newman led the way last season averaging 15.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while Hannah Rutten averaged 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. Jessica Newman and Alyssa Kerkhoff averaged 6.7 and 6.6 points per contest respectively.

UMD finished with a 14-13 mark last year and was 11-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Bulldogs finished tied for fourth in the NSIC North Division. They defeated Bethel University 80-71 in an exhibition contest last weekend in Duluth.

Arkansas-Monticello enters play this weekend after a season opening 84-74 win against Lindenwood at home last Saturday. The Cotton Blossoms trailed 35-28 at the break, but outscored the Lions 56-39 in the second half while shooting a blistering 87 percent (20-for-23) from the field. The
Blossoms made all six of their three-point attempts in the frame.

Jordan Goforth scored a game-high 28 points to lead UAM while Tamia Grady dropped in 26 and Nikki Mullen finished with 13. The Blossoms outrebounded the Lions by a 30-to-29 margin and finished the contest shooting 60.4 percent from the floor and went 9-for-15 beyond the arc.

Arkansas-Monticello finished last season with a record of 6-21, 3-17 in the Great American Conference.

Also on Saturday Minnesota Duluth will square off against Pittsburg State in a neutral site contest beginning at 10:30 a.m.
