Macke's late goal gives Miners win at Drury, GLVC Tournament berth

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team is back in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, thanks to some late heroics Wednesday night.

Given a free kick opportunity deep in Drury's end of the field with nearly three minutes left in regulation time, Joe Macke (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central HS) headed in the serve to give the Miners a 1-0 victory over the Panthers to clinch the last spot in the conference tournament that will begin this weekend.

After Ben Emnett (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) was fouled near the sideline inside the 18-yard line, Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sent a serve into the box that was deflected by David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) and headed home by Macke past DU goalkeeper Blake Andrews to break the scoreless tie in a hard-fought contest between the two rivals.

With the victory, the Miners return to the GLVC Tournament but will have to wait until Thursday night to find out who their opening round opponent will be.  S&T will enter the tournament as the eighth seed, but the top seed won't be determined until after Quincy hosts Truman State, as their scheduled game on Wednesday was postponed a day due to weather.

A win by Quincy will give the Hawks the top seed, but a loss or a tie will send the Miners to Indianapolis for the first round contest.

The Miners came out of the gate fast Wednesday, getting four shots off in the first 12-plus minutes of action including two on goal.  S&T outshot the Panthers 8-4 in the first 45 minutes and had all four shots that were on goal.

Drury got the wind at its backs on a breezy night at the Cooper Sports Complex and got a couple of good scoring chances in the first 10 minutes after the break, but Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) turned those efforts away.

The Panthers were able to keep play at the Miners' end of the field for a good chunk of the second half, as the Miners had only three shots in the second half prior to getting the decisive free kick opportunity.  S&T kept the Panthers from getting a shot away after the Macke goal with 2:53 remaining.

Missouri S&T had a 12-9 advantage in shots for the game, while the Panthers had seven corner kick chances to two for S&T.  Jackson recorded his sixth shutout of the season with two saves, as he has allowed only one goal in the Miners' last four contests.
