Men's soccer team looks to lock up playoff spot in GLVC finale

10/29/2013 1:55:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team enters the final day of Great Lakes Valley Conference play as the holder of the final playoff spot and can land a berth to the conference tournament with a victory in Wednesday's season finale as it faces Drury University in an 8:30 p.m. contest in Springfield, Mo.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Rolla, but heavy rain on Tuesday and more that is anticipated on Wednesday forced the move to Springfield, where the game will be played at the Cooper Sports Complex following the S&T-Drury women's game slated to begin at 6 p.m.

A win would clinch the playoff berth for the Miners, who could move as high as seventh in the seeding if Missouri-St. Louis drops its season finale Wednesday to Maryville. However, a tie or a loss could put the Miners in danger of missing the tournament as they would be at the mercy of two other games being played Wednesday that have a direct impact on the chase for the final available spot in the tournament field.

Truman State and Wisconsin-Parkside are both one-half game in back of S&T in the standings heading into the final day of the season. Quincy, the current leader in the GLVC, plays at Truman State in the afternoon, while UW-Parkside will play at Lewis Wednesday night.

The Miners moved into this position by virtue of their 2-0 victory Sunday over Wisconsin-Parkside, as goals by David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) and Ben Emnett (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) a little over five minutes apart midway through the first half gave S&T all the offense it would need to improve to 7-7-2 overall and 6-6-2 in conference play.

Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) continues to lead S&T with four goals on the season, while senior goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) lowered his goals against average to 0.95 with his fifth shutout of the year Sunday.

Drury, who at the first of the month was ranked fourth nationally, comes in at 12-5 overall and 9-5 in the GLVC with four losses in the eight games it has played since attaining that ranking. The Panthers beat UW-Parkside last weekend before dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 20-ranked Lewis on Sunday.

Nick Ammann leads the Panthers in scoring with seven goals and three assists, while goalkeeper Blake Andrews owns a 0.89 goals against average.

Missouri S&T topped Drury 2-0 to end last season in Springfield.
